Size on disk much larger than actual size - how to fix ?

My folders of photos are showing properties of a much larger size than is physically possible on my laptop, this is not showing up as an issue on the laptop, but I can't  back them up effectively as have already used up a 2TB drive for a small portion of them ! I've seen some comments on forums about files being allocated 32mb regardless of their actual size, checking a few individual files, this looks likely to be the problem. Advice on how to fix this, so the actual file size is recorded, would be helpful.

Hi and thanks for reaching out! I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you. Please allow me to assist with your issue.

Try running chkdsk /f on the drive that is having the issue. It's possible that the master file table has recorded incorrect file sizes. Before running it, backup any important files that you cannot lose.

    1. Right click on Start Menu.
    2. Select Command (Admin) or Windows Powershell (Admin).
    3. Enter "chkdsk {driveletter} /f" (i.e. "chkdsk c: /f" if it's C Drive)
    4. If prompted"Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)", answer Y and restart your computer.

Upon completion, check the folder size again.

Please let me know if I can help you further!

    Hi!

Check for hidden files & folders. Go to My Computer - View(menu) - Options - View Tab.

Select Show hidden files , folders and drive and also uncheck Hide Protected Operating System File.

Then click Ok. Now check your folder once again.

Let me know if your issue was resolved and don't forget to reset the View settings you changed above.
