WIN 10 back-up takes 3+ hours!

Hello; when I do my weekly WIN 10 desktop back-up, it's taking 3 hours or more now. I use Control Panel, System & Security, Back Up & Restore.  I upgraded from WIN 7 to 10 years ago, but it still says Back Up & Restore (Windows 7). I'm using a 3.0 32GB Sandisk, and my back up is about 18 GB.  It's taking longer every time, so what can I do to streamline this process? Thank you for your help, Steven F.

... I've been using this method for years  ...

Look, my friend, it's not my role to convince you. You do as you wish with your computer. If you're the type who's impressed by a person's qualifications, here are my qualifications: My life is on my computer, so I take backing up very seriously, and have invested a lot of time and effort in learning how to backup effectively.  I have been making daily backups consistently, reliably, automatically and quickly (i.e., in minutes.) I can restore those backups just as quickly and just as reliably - and I have. To me, that's what matters.

Bulldog; I've been using this method for years to create a full back-up ever week, it's worked successfully. It used to take an hour, but takes longer & longer, now 3 hours today. I was wondering what changed recently, like a Windows Update, etc., or what if anything I was doing incorrectly.

    Thank you for replying! Steven

    Hi Steven,

I'm Independent Advisor not Microsoft employee or support person. But I'm in contact with Windows developers since 1995 - as a one of the best Windows beta-testers till 2009 when program was closed, as an MVP in 2005-2017 including Windows System & Performance nomination. So I have deep enough Windows knowledge and you may trust me. It's a pleasure for me to help others and I'll do all my best to help you.

    a) USB flash drives sometimes use low enough writing speed during small data block writing,

    b) please check your SunDisk writing speed according manual,

    c) Back Up & Restore (Windows 7) is normal. It means Microsoft did not create new backup mehaism.

You may try to use 64GB external USB SSD instead of USB flash drive.

Backup and Restore (Windows 7) is not supported for making new backups. It was carried forward to Windows 10 so that can people can restore backups that were made in Windows 7.

Being unsupported for making new backups, it may work or it may not, and it may work well or it may work poorly. It works for some people but not others.

If you want backups that you can rely on, third-party backup applications are the way to go.
