Unable to re-format hard disk on Windows 7 enabled laptop

Windows is not designed to wipe itself out.

If you just want to wipe everything from the Hard Drive, including the operating system.

This will wipe anything it finds on the hard drive.

And if you do have a Manufacturer's Recovery Partition on your Hard Drive and you can Boot into Windows, you should be able to make and have your own Recovery Disks from it to reinstall the Operating System in case of Hard Drive failure.

Look under Programs > your Computer Manufacturer's name > then their System Tools or Recovery Software Headings for them, depending how it is worded.

If you can not find any reference to it, contact the Manufacturer for advice on how to make those Recovery Disks.

I am looking to give away an old laptop to charity. This laptop runs on Windows version 7. Before donating the laptop, I wanted to wipe out all data and re-format the disk

I am unable to find a simple way to do this. The diskmgmt.exe command allowed me to look at all partitions on teh drive except C: and D:. I also dont see any option under System and Security tab to do a re-formatting.

How can I do this without downloading dubious software available on the internet that claims to wipe hard disks clean?

Hi, there are many ways to wipe the hard drive but we always consider those steps which safe and secure.

Simply erasing all the data on your hard drive and formatting it is not enough security. One more thing there are many data recovery software available online that can recover deleted, formatted data easily.

So the first manual method to wipe the hard drive is Zero fill hard drive via command prompt. It is also called format command, to do so you can follow these steps:

1.       Tap the Search button on the taskbar and type “cmd” in the search box. Right click “cmd” and select “Run as administrator

2.       Type format g: /fs:NTFS /p:1 and press Enter to format the G drive with the NTFS file system and write zeros to every sector of the drive once. You can change the drive letter and file system based on your need.

3.      Type y and press Enter to confirm erase data.

4.       Wait until the format process is completed.

5.       After the format, type a name for the drive as volume label, or don’t, and then press Enter.

6.       Type exit and press Enter to exit Command Prompt.
