Laptop in-built keyboard not working in Windows 10

Hello community:

I have a 7 year old Toshiba laptop (specs below) that originally came with Windows 7. I updated to Windows 10 Home  about 3 years ago and all went well. Just about 2 weeks ago I boot my computer and suddenly the keyboard is not working. I shut down the computer by holding down the power button, turn it on again but this this time I enter the BIOS screen. In the BIOS the keyboard works perfectly, the arrow keys work, F1-F12 keys work, CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK indicator lights turn on/off when pressed. I've tried all configurations in the BIOS to see if it solves the problem, including resetting the default configuration, but nothing works. As soon as the Windows 10 logo appears the keyboard stops responding. Interestingly enough, the CAPS LOCK indicator light turns on and it cannot be turned off when pressing. It goes off eventually and then the NUMS LOCK light does the same.

I've tried all standard procedures found in the internet, even mess with the registry. I've been able to solve other problems by following online tutorials, but not this time. Microsoft Tech Support remote accessed my laptop and did all sorts of troubleshooting but nothing worked. The keyboard drive in device manager is not detecting any problem, and it says the device is working correctly.

The problem, as I said, started 2 weeks ago and my Windows 10 Home version at the time was 1803. Windows never upgraded to version 1809. As part of trying to solve the problem, I did a complete clean install of Windows version 1903. The upgrade went well but the keyboard still doesn't work on Windows. A connected USB keyboard does work.

Please help. All the specs are here:

Toshiba Satellite P755D Laptop

Processor: AMD A8-3500M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics 1.50 GHz

System type: 64 bit operating system, x64 based processor

Pen and touch: No pen or touch input is available for this display

OS Edition: Windows 10 Home

OS version: 1903

OS installation date: 6/1/2019

OS build: 18362.145

Thanks.

    Hello,

Please run Keyboard troubleshooter from Settings app > Update & security > Troubleshoot. See if this helps you.

If that doesn't helps, try this:

    1. Press Windows + X, select Device Manager.
    2. Under Device Manager, right click on your keyboard device/driver and select Uninstall. Click OK.
    3. Then click Action > Scan for hardware changes.
    4. Close Device Manager and reboot.

Else, go to your laptop manufacturer's website and download latest keyboard drivers for your system mode and install them.

    Hope this helps!

Hi Greg Carmack - Windows MVP 2010-19:

I followed your steps one by one and the problem still persists. I'm going thorugh the results of each step:

    step 1) System Restore:

When the problem first appeared I tried a system restore, but the Recovery Wizard sent me to a screen where I had to type my password to approve the restore. Since I didn't have a keyboard and there was no on-screen keyboard option, I decided to do a full PC Reset instead. The reset wiped all restore points that I could have had.

    step 2) Update History:

Again, the full reset of Windows erased all update history, and I was left with the updates done during Windows installation. I think I acted to quickly when doing that reset, but I was desperate.

step 3) Device manager update driver.

This didn't work for automatic updates nor manual updates.

    step 4) Roll back driver

Since I did a clean install of windows, it wasn't possible to roll back to the previous driver.

    step 5) On-screen keyboard

    On-screen keyboard does work.

step 6) T****est it in repair mode

Did the repair mode and the problem persists.

    step 7) G****et it replaced

The laptop is not under warranty anymore and I don't think it's a hardware issue since the keyboard works perfectly in the BIOS screen.

step 8) Performing a power drain by unplugging everything and holding power button fo 30 seconds.

    This didn't work.

    step 9) Reset keyboard

    This didn't work.

    step 10) BIOS settings

There are not BIOS settings in my laptop that control the keyboard.

step 11) Windows 10 performance and install integrity checklist

Tried all steps in the checklist and nothing worked. I have done a USB clean install of Windows 10 and that did'nt work either.

    step 12) Update BIOS firmaware

The BIOS has the latest update that appears in the manufacturer's website for my model. This didn't solve the keyboard problem.

**step 13)**Upgrade to the latest version of Windows 10

Already mentioned that on step 11, updated to version 1903 and that didn't work.

That's all. I still have an unopperative laptop keyboard. I have been comparing my laptop's device manager list with other laptop's and I found two things that are different so far:

    • In my laptop's device manager, under Human Interface Devices, I have two listed devices which I don't know what they are. Both of them are called "HID-compliant consumer control device", both of them enabled and working. I only have an USB mouse attached to my laptop.
    • In the resources tab for the ps/2 keyboard device, there are only three resources: I/O Range 0060-0060,

I/O Range 0064-0064 and IRQ. Other laptops have more than three resources listed in this tab.

I should mention that my Synaptics touchpad doesnt work either, but I didn't notice since I always use an USB mouse with my laptop.

I hope you can help me further since this is a complete mystery. Thanks and have a nice day.

Hi Human. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP here to help you.

I will give you everything possible for keyboard problems. If you need help with any steps I'll be standing by here to help you.

Try the Keyboard Troubleshooter at Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.

If this began within the recent past, See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem began: http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/how-t...

Check which Updates were installed at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Installed Update History and try uninstalling any from around the time this started. If they return and cause the same problem then hide them with the Hide Updates tool: https://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent...

What also might work is to go into Device Manager, reached by right clicking the Start button, choose the Keyboard device, on Driver tab try Updating the driver automatically.

If this fails from the same location try rolling back or Uninstalling the Keyboard driver, which works in a surprising number of cases where keyboard is messed up by Updates. Restart PC to reinstall driver.

See if the keyboard will work in Safe Mode with Networking, or Safe Mode: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

If not see if the On-screen Keyboard works at Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard > Turn On the On Screen Keyboard.

If so then it could confirm the keyboard is failing, so test it in repair mode to see if it works since it uses different drivers there: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanc...

If not you can contact a laptop manufacturer to see if you can still get it replaced under warranty, or check for replacement keyboards for that model from the PC maker or online from after-market OEM's that exactly match it.

This keyboard bulletin from Lenovo can also apply to other brands: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht...

    Try resetting the keyboard: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/reset-keyboard-se...

You can also remap keyboard keys using one of these methods: https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/missing-key-remap...

Check in your BIOS or UEFI firmware Setup for keyboard settings there, too.

If none of these works then go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

Update your drivers and BIOS/UEFI firmware from PC or motherboard maker's Support Downloads web page, using the full model number, Serial Number or Dell Service Tag on sticker. Compare the latest drivers available for download with the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu. Make sure you have the latest BIOS or UEFI firmware, Chipset, Display (Video), Sound, USB3, Bluetooth, Network and all other drivers, or else download and install the latest now.

Updating drivers from the Device Manager or Windows Update is rarely enough. The most basic thing we need to learn to maintain a PC is keep the latest manufacturer's drivers installed from their Support Downloads web page.

Another thing that might help as it solves many problems is to Upgrade to the latest version by installing the Media Creation Tool from this link http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m... choosing Download Tool Now, install the tool, open it and choose Upgrade this PC Now. This will save your files and apps while bringing you up to the latest version by the most stable method. It will also bring all of your Updates current and solve most problems since it reinstalls Windows.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you'll wait to rate whether my post helped you, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
