Windows Photo App Freezing (Sometimes) HELP

For some reason, when I use Window's Photos App, it works like normal, opening and viewing pictures I look at from my Windows Explorer.

However, sometimes when I open a picture (Sometimes the same picture) it will instead show nothing in the window. It's just a blank screen with no picture or buttons/menus.

I'm still able to close the window by clicking the 'X' and then I have to wait like 15 seconds for it to allow me to open the picture again.

This has been driving me crazy and I want to know how I can fix this issue or what is causing it.

  • I have Terminated the App.
  • I have tried Resetting the App.
  • I have tried Reinstalling the App.

It still does this. I need help to know why this is happening and how do I make it stop doing this.

I attached a picture to show what the screen looks like when it doesn't work properly.

This happens 70% of the time.

    Hi

My name is Bernard and hopefully, this will help answer your question, I actually experience the same problem as before, hopefully the troubleshooting steps below works for you too.

Note: I know some methods didn't work for you, moreover you need to do this in sequence to make sure.

Method 1. Repair all Windows in app:

Download the Windows Store App Troubleshooter. Link below.

    http://aka.ms/solutionstoreapp

-Run and follow the steps provided

    • Open Powershell with admin (Press Windows key + X then click Windows Powershell Admin)

Copy, paste and enter the code below:

    Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Restart computer after finishing then proceed to method 2 if same issue persist.

    Method 2. Reinstall photo app.

    • Open Powershell with admin (Press Windows key + X then click Windows Powershell Admin)

Copy, paste and enter the code below:

    Get-AppxPackage *photo* | Remove-AppxPackage

After you uninstall it, install it back by searching the app to Windows Store.

If none will work from the above solution I suggest to do an in-place upgrade wherein it will upgrade the device to the latest version and repair all issues without deleting any files.

Note: before doing this make sure to create a restore point: https://support.microsoft.com/en-hk/help/402753...

    1. go to this link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...
    2. Select Download tool, and select Run. You need to be an administrator to run this tool.
    3. On the License terms page, if you accept the license terms, select Accept.
    4. On the What do you want to do? page, select Upgrade this PC now, and then select Next.
    5. After downloading and installing, it should fix the issue.

    Reference: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...

Note: if you receive error: “This Pc can’t be upgrade, follow the steps below”

Method 1. Go to C:$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther then delete the file name compatscancache.dat

Then try again or reboot the PC first then try again.

You might not see the folder as it is hidden, make sure to show hidden files first.

Let me know how does it goes and I hope that helps :)

Darn it. I spoke too soon. It did it again. So I'll try Method 2.

Hmmmm. The First method seems to be working so far. I just restarted the computer and I started opening pictures on it. It's not causing the issue anymore.

I'm gonna keep trying it through out my time on the computer and if it does it again, I'll try method 2. Until then, I'll keep using it for a little bit longer. If its no longer doing it, then I'll mark this as fixed.

Thank you for your help and thank you for responding so quick. Sorry it took me a bit to get back to you on this, got busy today.

Hopefully I won't need help more on this, but I hope you have a wonderful day, thanks again and stay safe!
