iPhone to PC photo transfer via USB stops after seconds

Hi there,

I have a brand new, clean install Windows 10 64bit PC and an iPhone.  When I connect the phone to the PC, after some seconds I see the phone in the explorer and can see all the folders and photo/videos on the phone.

Problem:

When I drag&drop the folders or a selection of files to the PC to copy them, the copying starts and then stops after only a few seconds - usually only one or two files get copied. The file transfer box in Windows simply closes.

I can do this again, so the phone does not "disconnect" from the PC, in theory I could repeat this a few hundred times to copy all my photos... well, I would hate to have to do that.

What I tried so far:

Tried to use the photo app in Windows and use that to "replicate" the photos - same problem, it copies a few at best, then the iPhone is "no longer present" error box appears. In this case, un-plugging of the phone is necessary to try again. Problem is the same with various iPhones, I tried my 11, an XR and an XS - same issue with all of them. All are on the newest software version. Called Apple, they did a remote diagnosis of my phone, switched the cable to a brand new one, directly connected it to the mainboard, zero issues there, so it has to be Windows.

Any ideas what I have to do in Windows to get this issue fixed?

Thanks!!

    Hello SvenMBL,

I am Antonio, a Microsoft Community independent advisor, a Windows 10 and Microsoft office user like you. I hope I can help you on your concern.

Please try to follow the steps below.

    1. Connect your iPhone from your computer
    2. Go to Settings on your iPhone
    3. Open Photos and navigate to the bottom
    4. Under ‘Transfer to Mac or PC’, change it from Automatic to Keep Originals (“Automatically transfer photos and videos in a compatible format, or always transfer the original file without checking for compatibility.”)
    5. Connect again the iPhone device to the Windows 10 computer and copy/paste the files again.

You're response is highly appreciated. Please let me know if the issue is fixed, if not, I will find another way.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

    Keep safe always.

    Sincerely,

    Antonio

    Hi Benedict,

Thanks for the tips!! I tried #1, no integrity faults found, restart did not change a thing.

#2 and 3 will follow, I will write an update later today.

As to the extent of the problem, I did now also try

    • iPhone 11 & XR on Windows 7 laptop - exact same problem
    • iPhone 7 on Windows 10 Pro PC - exact same problem

I have now run tests with 4 different iPhones and 5 PCs, all have the same issue, so this is not a freak problem but seems to me like a systematic fault.

I cannot believe that I am the first to stumble across this :-)

    Later,

    Sven

I have the same problem, I slowed it out.

It's really  easy, Please follow the steps below,

On your, iPhone go to Settings > scroll down and select Photos > scroll down... then you can find "Transfer to MAC or PC" under this option you can find 2 options, It's Automatic Or Keep Originals. "Tic on" Keep Originals. Thats all

    I got it resolved by

    1. Using all the latest updates,
    2. Following the below steps. After this I am able to transfer without any interruptions. Tried transferring 2000+ photos in one go.
    3. In the iOS
    4. Open Settings
    5. Tap Photo App
    6. Scroll all the way down until you see the section Transfer to Mac or PC
    7. Change this setting to Keep Original

    Hi Benedict,

I must say you have pretty good sources, there was actually a new USB driver from Apple available just this morning.

I did install it, restartet the PC, reconnected the iPhone.

Now, the copy job runs a bit longer, but then also stops after ca. 1-2 minutes. The error message is "Device no longer accessible" and I have to un- und replug the iPhone to continue.

Any additional tipps? This is clearly not the solution.

    Thank you very much!!
