installing apps only from windows store ... Can't turn off!

Hi,

I have a student that is attempting to download software she needs for my class. When she tries to install it, the Microsoft Store pops up.

She is using Windows 10, as am I.

I was able to find where to change this to "install from anywhere" on my computer.

But when she shared her screen with me, and went to the same location, the "Choose where to get apps" section was not there at all!

I instructed her to run windows update and keep doing it until it says up to date, but I think her version wasn't far behind mine.

Where can she find this on her Windows 10 laptop? She needs to be able to install software from anywhere!

Any help is appreciated.

    Hi codenat

Okay, you have done everything right and yet, you are still not getting the option to switch out of S Mode, you need to contact the PC manufacturer of that device to find out how to switch out of S Mode, because they seem to be blocking that option . . .

If Windows 10 is in S Mode, she can only install Apps from the Microsoft Store, she cannot install 3rd party applications

You can switch Windows 10 out of S Mode to Windows 10 Home, it costs nothing to switch and then she can install that software . . .

    Open the Settings App

Go to Update and Security - Activation

In the Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro section, select Go to the Store. (If you also see an "Upgrade your edition of Windows" section, be careful not to click the "Go to the Store" link that appears there.)

On the Switch out of S mode (or similar) page that appears in the Microsoft Store, select the Get button.

After you see a confirmation message on the page, you'll be able to install apps from outside of the Microsoft Store.

I asked her that. She is the only user of the laptop. I am pretty sure her account is an admin account.

    Hi Codenat,

The option isn't available if the user account your student is using is not an administrator account. Can you please cross-check with her?

    Hi codenat

I am Dave, an Independent Advisor, I will help you with this . . .

    1

On her PC, go to Settings - Update and Security - Activation

On that page, what edition (Home, Pro, Home S . . etc) is installed on that PC?

Is Windows 10 in S mode?

    2

Click your Start Button, type winver and hit Enter

On the resulting dialog, what Version No. and build No. of Windows 10 are you running?
