Yellow tint on laptop screen

Hello, my laptop screen has a yellowish tint to it since 30/07.

On that day, I opened my laptop lid, and, as it had been sleeping for more than a day, the system and apps were kind of slow. My screen was normal then. I decided to restart the computer, something I've done many times before to fix the slowness. When it rebooted, the screen had the yellow tint to it (right at the sign in screen, it was especially noticeable because my wallpaper has a lot of yellow in it). Logged in, and it was still the same. To confirm, I opened WhatsApp Desktop and the color change was very noticeable, with the greens having an almost neon tone. On my browser (I use Edge on dark mode) all the gray and black tones were yellowish.

Since then I've tried many "solutions" as suggested online:

  • Turning off Night Light - my night light is never on, but I turned it on and off just to be sure. Nothing changed.
  • I installed all pending updates (the only one left is Windows 2004, that I haven't downloaded yet). Nothing changed.
  • Changing color profile on color management - Nothing changed, even after restarting.
  • Calibrating colors on color management - this was a tricky one. I calibrated the colors, and they looked fine, "better" even. I thought they were back to normal, but it was just a placebo effect. I eventually restarted the computer and noticed the colors were off again, this time darker and redder (I know this is an issue with my calibrating, but it means I cannot change the colors back to normal - it's quite difficult to know for certain if I'm doing it "right"). After this, I deleted the calibrated color profile and changed it back to the system default (sRGB IEC61966-2.1  / sRGB Color Space Profile.icm). It went back to the yellow tint.
  • Calibrating colors on the Intel Control Panel - same issue as creating a personalized color profile, I can't quite judge when it is "just right". Went back to the defaults.
  • Checking for updates - on Device Manager, I right clicked the Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 driver and searched for updates, none were found.
  • I even created a different local user profile and signed in it, but it still had the same tint (not sure this would have changed, but wanted to at least try).
  • I connected the laptop to an external monitor (a TV). Some things happened - when only projected on the second screen, the colors were normal. When projecting on both screens, both had the yellow tone. After projecting on both and switching to only the second screen, the tint persisted. When switching from that to only the computer screen, the computer had the yellow tone. Finally, from there, switching to only the second screen, the colors went back to normal.

What I haven't done, although suggested online - installed Windows 2004, uninstalling and reinstalling the graphics driver, booting in safe mode, checking the colors on BIOS screen.

Is there anything else I can do? The tint does not make any app unusable, but it is still very uncomfortable on the eyes.

I'm really glad to hear it. That normally means the driver was installed badly or malfunctioning. If it persists then I'd try all other driver options from the second step in my first post, including finding a newer or other driver that is more stable.

But there's a good chance it's fixes, so let's hope for the best.

Let me know if there's anything else. I will stay subscribed to this thread.

Even I have the same issue with my laptop. I uninstalled the driver and then installed the latest driver from the AMD website but the problem still continues. Plus the yellow tint is not permanent, it comes for a few seconds and when i open the display settings it goes back to normal and does not come again as long as i dont let the laptop sit idle for too long. I tried all the methods you have mentioned above.

Hi Raphaela. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator, here to help you.

    1. I don't see any mention of the Night Light which gives the screen a yellowish-orange tint to be easier on the eyes at night. Check in Settings > System > Display > Night Light if turning it off resolves this.
    2. The Display driver is so important here that merely updating it is sometimes not enough. So let's try everything possible to get it working correctly:

First make sure you have updated the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

If necessary first remove the old driver using DDU (not necessary with Microsoft Basic driver which is a placeholder if nothing else is available) and/or installing in Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet), or Safe Mode, accessed by one of these methods: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/...

or the Nvidia Update utility here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e...

or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

    1. Reset the theme by setting a new Theme from Settings > Personalization > Themes or from the many spectacular free Themes you can download from the Store to that control panel to choose from: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/collectio...

If you don't want the theme used to reset this, you can then personalize with your own background slideshow or picture in Settings > Personalization > Backgrounds, but most personal pictures are not as high resolution as the Theme packages which are some of the most expensive scenic pictures ever taken. Here's how to change backgrounds: https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/change-deskt...

and here's how to Troubleshoot Backgrounds not working:

To get color back on the task bar, start menu and window frames after Version 1903 turned the Light theme dull grey follow this guide:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

To get the spectacular scenic backgrounds back on the Lock screen when the PC first starts up, go into Settings > Personalization > Lock Screen and set the drop down menu to Windows Spotlight.

If you want the Fun Facts you can hover the mouse over on the Lock Screen or click to go to info pages about the scenes, change dropdown temporarilty to Picture, tick the box to Get fun facts, then change it back to Windows Spotlight.

Yes, you should leave the box unchecked unless you want to Clean Install a newer or different driver, because it will uninstall and remove the software of the one that's presently installed. Without checking the box it will reinstall at restart which is what that step is trying to achieve.

Keep me posted on your progress as I will be here to help until the case is resolved.

    Hi Greg,

    1. Turning off night light was actually the first thing I tried - it was already off, and unfortunately not what's causing the problem.
    2. Intel driver assistant tells me that my graphics driver is a "customized computer manufacturer driver", and so it cannot update it. I am considering uninstalling and reinstalling it, but when I click on uninstall it prompts me to check (or not) a box that says "Delete the driver software for this device.". I think I remember reading somewhere that I should leave the box unchecked, but I'm not sure if I should or not.
    3. I tried resetting the theme before but forgot to mention, but nothing changes anyway.

So should I check or uncheck that prompt?

Thank you for your help so far.

It worked! Thank you so so so much.

As soon as I uninstalled it, the colors went back to normal. I was reluctant on rebooting the computer, and it was a bit slow when starting up, but it's been 15 minutes and the colors are still ok.

Although a very small issue, it did bother me a lot. Again, thank you so much!
