Elan touchpad

I have an HP laptop I purchased in January 2019. I spent three days last year working with a tech person to disable the Elan touchpad that came installed. Windows 10 updated a few days ago and enabled the touchpad. Please tell me how to disable it again. It is a constant problem and annoyance!!! None of the instructions on the web worked. I've even tried uninstalling the driver, but it's reinstalled when I restart the computer. This is not an event that endears Microsoft, HP or Elan.

    Good Morning, Louie!

I am embarrassed to admit that early this morning I found, right in my Start Menu, an app named Elan Touchpad Settings. I don't recall ever seeing it before but two clicks later the touchpad was disabled. Easy peasy.

That said, this issue must be unique to HP laptops with Elan Touchpads running under Windows 10. I tried a dozen or more suggested fixes from the internet. Several were for Dells, a few for HPs, all for Windows 10 and absolutely nothing worked. I even tried uninstalling the driver, but each time the computer rebooted, the touchpad was enabled again. My husband restrained me from taking a hammer to it!! ;-)

You were the only one suggesting the change to the registry. I hate mucking with the registry, but I was willing to try it. Found the app before I tried.

Once again, thanks for your help. In the future, I'll try to pay attention to what's actually installed on the computer and try to help myself!

    Best regards,

    Chris

    Thanks again, Louie.

I'll try this one tomorrow. Too tired and angry to try it tonight. AND I'll let you know how it goes.

Device Manager identifies the touchpad is an Elan.

    Again, thanks for your help.

I find this particular "feature/function" particularly annoying. I cannot imagine how anyone can type on a keyboard with the touchpad located where it is. Years ago, I had a touchpad that was at the lower right hand corner, out of the way. I loved it. This one merely drives my blood pressure up!

Hi there! I am Louie, a Microsoft Community member and a fellow Windows 10 user like you. Hope you're doing well and safe there.

To disable the touchpad option, follow the steps below:

-Press Windows logo + X keys on the keyboard and select Control panel from the context menu.

-From the top right corner of the screen click on View by and select Large icons.

-Click on Mouse option from the window.

-Click on Device settings tab from the Mouse properties screen, button the Disable button to turn off the touchpad option.

    -Click on Apply and OK.

-Close the window and check if the changes are effective.

Hope this will do the trick.

    Sincerely,

    Louie

    Hello, Louie

    Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately, I have already tried this and it didn't work. First, the choice "Control Panel" does not appear when I press Windows logo + X.  Secondly, there is no where in the window/menu that offers a "View by" nor is "Large Icons" shown.

If I go to the Control Panel by another route, there is no way that I can find to disable the touchpad.

Your fix worked just fine on my previous laptop, but doesn't seem to work on this one. It is infuriating!!!

Hope you are safe where you are! Thanks for the reply. I appreciate your help.

    Chris

To follow up on this issue, here are a few other things you can try:

-Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu and select Control Panel from the list.

-When Control Panel opens, go to Hardware and Soundsection and select Mouse.

-When Mouse settings window opens, you should see ELANor Device Settings tab. Switch to it.

-Locate Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached option and enable it.

-Click Apply and OK to save changes.

If that doesn't work or isn't available, a registry edit should be the solution for us, I'd personally suggest a registry backup by clicking on file and export before performing the below steps, to be on a safer side:

Open Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Elantech/Othersetting/DisableWhenDetectUSBMousekey in the left pane.

Change the value from 0 to 1 and close Registry Editor.

After making those changes your touchpad will now be disabled every time you connect a mouse to your laptop. As you can see, even though this option isn’t available, you can still enable it by following these steps. We have to mention that this solution applies only if you’re using ELAN touchpad.
