windows 10 globe icon indicates no internet access when there is access

With the last couple of Windows 10 updates, I have encountered a problem/bug with the internet icon globe display indicating no internet access when in fact I have internet access for the most part.  It looks like this has been an issue for years.  With the past updates, I just kept restarting my computer until the issue resolved itself but is there a better way to correct the problem?  As stated, for the most part I have internet access but there are a few programs that will not run because they do not detect an internet connection.

Thanks in advance for any advise given.

I have four windows 10 computers at home, and they all had this problem.  They did not all break at the same time -- it looks like each one broke the last time the network connection was changed, for example from wired to wireless, or to a different wi-fi.

I fixed  all of the broken computers with this registry change (only the changed values are shown).

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet

This is just a workaround. More research is needed to find out what really caused the problem -- malware? defender? firewall? ISP? Something is preventing the computers from accessing www.msftconnecttest.com.

Type ncpa.cpl in the search box, go to the TCP / IPv4 internet protocol properties of your connection, try to manually assign the following DNS Server addresses to the network card:

    8.8.8.8

    8.8.4.4

Try to connect to the internet again and see if the situation improves.

    Hello cgraves (2),

what version and build of windows 10 are you running?

Open PowerShell or CMD and type ipconfig / all copy everything and post the result.

Meanwhile, Try Network Reset: Settings> Network and Internet> Status, click Network Reset on the right side, follow the instructions.
