I have just bought a computer which I have discovered has no operating system. It does not have a disc device either. Is there any way I can install Windows 10 on this machine.

    Hi Horace,

I am Joseph. If this computer doesn't have a disk drive you should try installing Windows with a USB, follow those steps.

    1. Make sure you need to download Media Creation Tool here.
    2. Read the license terms.
    3. The Media Creation Tool asks what you want to do. Upgrade this PC now: Moves your existing files, settings and programs to Windows 10. Create installation media for another PC: Creates a Windows installation disk image.
    4. Select your language, architecture and edition, we recommend you to use Windows 10 Pro with English (United States) language and x64 architecture.
    5. The Media Creation Tool asks you to choose which media to use, we recommend you to install Windows on a USB.
    6. You have to select a USB memory stick (e.g. Kingston DataTraveler), the files on the memory stick will be gone.
    7. The download process may take some time, depending on your computer specs.
    8. Insert the USB in another computer.
    9. Press F12 to go to the Boot Manager, if you have a boot device, choose USB Storage Device.
    10. After you save changes, it will ask you to boot from USB. So press any key and it will take you to the Windows installation wizard.
    11. Click on "Next" then click on "Install Now".
    12. It will take you to the Aero-style setup, asking you to type your product key. If you have no product key, click "Skip".
    13. Read the license terms then check "I accept the license terms".
    14. The setup wizard asks what kind of installation you want, we recommend you to choose the "Custom (advanced)" option.
    15. It will ask where you want to install Windows, we suggest you to click "New" and choose Drive 0 Partition 2.
    16. The install process may take some time depending on your computer specs.
    17. After the install process, it will take you to the OOBE.
    18. Type your product key, we recommend you NOT to type the product key.
    19. Use your own settings, we recommend you to use express settings.
    20. Create your account for your PC.
    21. After the OOBE, you will see the first time screen.

So that's it! You have Windows installed, I will keep working with you until it's done.

    Regards,

    Joseph Vincent Bongo

Hi there HoraceCallow, I will be your Independent Advisor for today, I hope we can both resolve your problem.

If the computer doesn't have any operating system installed and no disc drive available then you can create a bootable USB media drive.

You will need at least 8GB blank USB drive.

Please click on the link below to download the media creation tool.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...

Instructions are included in the same link on how to create and run the USB media drive on your computer.

For the license you can buy one either on Microsoft Store or Microsoft online store.

An SSD and a CD/DVD drive are two very different things Yes, SSDs are very good and I use one  (a much bigger one) on my computer. But they are alternatives to hard drives, not to CD/DVDs.

And yes, I'm well aware of the dangers of scratching a CD. But with a little care that should never happen; in all the years I've had a CD drive and all the CDs I've used, I've never lost one because of scratching.

My opinion remains the same. I recommend a that almost everyone have a CD/DVD drive.
