DVD/CD-ROM no longer exists in device manager, windows, etc. Driver not found at all.

I have tried ALL of the suggested fixes and my DVD/CD-ROM does not appear anywhere.

One fix said to try TROUBLESHOOTING the Hardware & Sound or Devices - This does not exist in my troubleshooting options.  There is NO Hardware/Sound and or Devices CATEGORY at all listed in troubleshooting.  All other categories are there.   See photos below.

Somehow the DRIVER to my DVD/CD-ROM has been removed.

It is connected and gets power.  It will open, I can insert a disc and close it.  It spins for a few seconds but no window opens.

This happened once before with a Windows update, but I was able to fix it with the suggested fixes.  This time, none work.

Where/HOW can I get a new driver to download to fix it!????

    Thank you.

It must have been after a recent windows 10 update.  It was working fine a few weeks ago.  I haven't been on the laptop much the last month or so.  It does not allow me to do a restore to earlier version either.

There is NO dvd/cd-rom category AT ALL in my device manager.  There is nothing to uninstall.  It does not exist.

I have restarted my laptop 6 or so times already.  That has not helped at all either.

I've searched Intel, and tried Toshiba - I have not been able to determine WHICH driver or update I even need.

It's very frustrating. Their sites were not helpful. I'll have to take it in to a repair shop and see if they can figure it out.

I have tried the registry subkey.  Didn't work.

Hello LisaLayne2, welcome to the Microsoft community, my name is Luiz Cruz, an independent consultant from Microsoft and I would be happy to help you.

I understand that your DVD player has stopped working properly. To be more assertive in your question, was this behavior presented after upgrading to Windows 10?

To update the driver, search for it on the device manufacturer's website and follow the installation instructions on the website.

To reinstall the driver, follow these steps:

1.Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run dialog box.

    1. Type devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog and press Enter. If an administrator password or confirmation is requested, enter the password or click Allow
    2. In Device Manager, expand DVD / CD-ROM drives, right-click the CD and DVD devices, and click Uninstall.

4.When prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click OK.

    5.Restart the computer.

After the computer is restarted, the drivers will be installed automatically.

If the problem is not resolved, try the next resolution.

To create the registry subkey, follow these steps:

    1. Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run box.
    2. Type regedit in the Run box and press Enter. If an administrator password or confirmation is requested, enter the password or click Allow
    3. In the navigation pane, locate the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi

1.Right-click atapi, point to New and click Key.

    1. Type Controller0 and press Enter.

3.Right-click on Controller0, point to New and then click DWORD Value (32 bits).

    1. Type EnumDevice1 and press Enter.

    5.Right-click EnumDevice1 and click Modify ....

    1. Type 1 in the Value data box and click OK.
    2. Exit Registry Editor.

    8.Restart the computer.

If this information was useful, please mark it as an answer, if your question has not been solved, please post again.

I hope I helped, even more!

    Windows 10 home

    Version 10.0.19041 Build 19041

    x64-based PC

I have had windows 10 for about 4 years now and the CD-ROM has been working fine.  I did have an issue with it not recognizing it after a previous windows 10 update a couple of years ago and followed all the recommended fixes at that time and it worked.

My (D:) drive does not exist at all right now in my computer.

From what I have learned, I need to install the driver from the manufacturer and I have no idea what model/brand the dvd/cd-rom drive is.  I don't really want to take my laptop apart to get that info.

I have not tried the BIOS search for it, and that is not something I'm not comfortable trying right now.

I will try to contact intel and hope that is the correct manufacturer of it and hopefully get the driver.

See computer management photo below - NO (D:) drive.  I have tried rescanning for it.  No luck.

Dear LisaLayne2, you can check which version and compilation of windows by right clicking on my "start" and go to "System", there you should show the windows specifications.

Is your laptop a Toshiba brand? If yes, access the link: https://www.toshiba-windows-drivers.com/

And search for your laptop model to be downloading the most current drivers.

If not, I suggest you take it to a trusted technician!

I hope I helped, even more!

What is the edition and compilation of your windows at the moment?

When your Cd-Rom driver was working normally was you using windows 10 or 7?
