Why does Task Manager indicate that I have 4 memory slots with only 2 in use when my laptop only has 2 SODIMM slots.

I am upgrading the available memory for my ASUS ROG STRIG G731GT . In looking at my options, I found that within the Performance tap of Task Manager that it shows my laptop having "Slots used: 2 of 4" so I had hoped to use the other two ports for additional memory. However, according to the hardware specifications for my laptop, there are only 2 x SODIMM slots available for use. I have an additional 1TB SSD which is for use with Intel Rapid Storage Technology, though I am not sure if it is related, especially since the SSD is currently installed. Since this seemed to be more of an issue with Task Manager than with my hardware, I came here to inquire about it.

Why does Task Manager indicate that I have 4 memory slots with only 2 in use when my laptop only has 2 SODIMM slots. WHERE ARE THE OTHER 2 SLOTS??

    Hi @Abhirupam.s__, how are You?!

I am Jediael, an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like You. I'll be happy to assist You today.

    Thank You for your return!!!

As another Expert guided me and I also noticed that ASUS on your laptop actually only has two RAM slots and the Performance Tab is wrongly reporting the number of slots.

What this means is that the Motherboard may be showing that although it is configured to have 04 Slots ... In the vast majority it comes "soldered only 02 Physical Slots" .... However, the Operating System reads what the Motherboard is configured for 04 Slots, but in fact only 02 Slots are in Operation!

This will happen in the vast majority of Notebooks and some PCs .... Since one thing is the configuration of the Motherboard and another one that is actually running!

I hope that the answer above will answer your question!

    Have an excellent day!

    Hope this helps!

    Sincerely,

If you have nothing in your slots what does it say?  Maybe the others are internal with things like your sound card and network cards installed?

When i removed all my RAM cards the pc didn't boot so couldn't open task manger. Also i have only one ASUS 2600mhz 8gb ddr4 sodimm

    ram stick

I have 8gb pre installed memory. So when i was thinking of upgrafing it, the  task manager said i had 1 out of 4 slots used. But when i dissambled my pc i found that there were only 2 slots and 1 of them were only in use. So i wanted to know that why is TASK MANAGER showing that i have 4 slots??

I also checked and had a tip from another Expert / Expert that ASUS and his laptop actually actually only two RAM slots and the Performance Tab is wrongly reporting the number of slots.

I hope that information can solve your doubts!

Your CPU has a dual channel memory controller and each channel can handle two slots. With two SO-DIMMs installed, both channels are active, but you only physically have one slot per channel on the motherboard, hence the display of all four slots with both occupied. The dual channel with Intel systems is always so that slots 1 and 2 are for a channel with 3 and 4 for the second channel.

Dual data rate ddr4. you have 2 ram slots. the task manager says 4 because it's double data

Without knowing the specific model of laptop you own, it is not possible to answer with authority. If you want a reliable answer, edit your question to mention the specific brand and model of laptop you own.

However, we can say in general that in modern systems, the relevant data is available through DMI and SMBIOS, which can be consulted from the software. This includes the number of memory slots on the motherboard and the hardware installed in those slots. So yes, if the BIOS does not lie completely, the data shown must be reliable.

It seems quite possible that your laptop has a memory module soldered to the motherboard and an expansion slot available for expansion. This would appear as two slots for software that queries the memory hardware data, but only one of them would be available for you to use or not use as you wish, so it can be listed online as "a memory slot, an available slot" or the like.

That said, the only way to be 100% sure is to open the laptop and look at the motherboard. However, you can get very close by looking at the supplier's specifications for the model you own. Look specifically for data in permanently mounted RAM versus available RAM expansion slots.

@Zedrick Del Credit - Microsoft Agent | Moderator:

When you purchase a computer, by default, it only has one RAM inserted and you have an option to expand the laptop's RAM by adding another one on the second slot. This explains why you only have one (1 of 2) RAM showing on the Task Manager.

    * In your case 2 of 4 (It refers to the Virtual Memory or the Type of RAM you use to Expand the capacity of your PC / Notebook) *
