Windows Update; Unable to install HP Laserjet Printer M28-M31 Update, installation problem : error 0x800f020b

My Operating system is Windows 10. I am using HP laser jet Printer M28-M31 connected to my Sony PC Laptop. During routine updates checking through settings>update & Security, the following message is displayed

Error encountered:

A current driver on your PC may be better than the driver we are trying to install. We will keep trying to install.

Hewett Packard USB 6/1/2018- 46.2.2631.18152

Status Download error-0x800f020b

Status pending install

With the above message popping up in the windows 10 update screen, the HP printer update of 2018 is not installing the update and shows installation pending

I discussed with the Staples store where I purchased the printer and the technical manager is unable to resolve this issue. Do not know the reason why the installation is not taking place and shows installation error. Obviously the update was downloaded, but it shows installation pending

Grateful if anyone could assist to resolve this problem

Tks

Hi and thanks for reaching out. My name is William. I'm a Microsoft Windows Certified Professional and Systems Administrator. I'll be happy to help you out today.

You can ignore this. This simply means that the current version of the driver installed is just that, more current than the version Windows is offering from the Windows Update Catalog. This is because HP and Microsoft are not working in concert, they both maintain their own databases of drivers, and it is expected that HP will always be more current than Microsoft with respect to their drivers. The same goes for other providers like Dell, Intel, ect.

If its a nuisance, you can disable driver updates from being pushed during Windows updates: https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/disable-auto...

    Dear Mr Williams,.

Thank u so much for the clarification. As advised , I will ignore the error since it is not going to affect windows 10 version 2004 updates

So the update being offered is not related to your printer, it is related to the USB controller/chipset on the mainboard.

To answer your last question, this is not a Microsoft/Windows driver, it is an HP driver. However, because HP maintains their own drivers "in-house", they are able to deliver them faster using their own update software (HP Assistant or whatever it is called). If they do no release the driver to Microsoft, then when Windows update does the comparison between the to versions and sees the current version installed is higher that the one it has been provided, it throws this message.

    Hi Mr Williams

Thank you for your response. I could infer from your response that Win 10 drivers are not upto date, I could not figure out “The current version of the driver installed ,” here are you referring to Windows 10 driver or HP Printer driver. Pls note that I purchased this printer in Jan 2019 where as the HP drivers update was of Sep 2018. In which case the purchased printer driver must have this update, but is  is causing installation problem error.

I am only worried that this error is not going affect the routine win 10 updates.

Of course it is annoying to see displaying “error encountered “ on the windows update page when we check for Win 10 updates.

Can you please suggest whether there is any possibility to update windows drivers, if they are obsolate, as compared to HP printer updates

    Thank you
