My windows update scan is stuck on: "Error encountered" then under it "One of the update services is not running properly", and when I reach the services app, each time I run the windows update service to automatic and press apply then start, it the disables by itself whenever I close it or restart the app, been having this issue for a while now.

    Hello ibrahimeid1,

I'm John an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you. I'll be happy to assist you today. I understand you have a problem with Windows update service disabled. Did you made any changes recently? When was the last time it was working properly?

It looks like something is interfering with Windows update service. Please try to temporary disable or uninstall your Antivirus or anti-malware programs and try to enable Windows update service again.

    **Perform a Clean Boot

Determine whether a background program or a software conflict is interfering with windows update.

Go to the search box > type MSConfig.

Select System Configuration > go to the Services tab.

Select and Put a check on "Hide all Microsoft services" > Disable all.

Go to Startup tab > Open Task Manager > Disable all the unnecessary services running there. Restart your computer and check for updates,

For more details, please check this support article

After that, Please try to Enable Windows update service again.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any further concerns.

    Sincerely

    Hello ibrahimeid1,

Did you just installed a new update? If its working before installing a new windows update then its related. The update may have caused the issue.

    Sincerely

    Hello ibrahimeid1,

Great, I am happy that worked. Today is patch Tuesday so new updates are being offered via Windows Update settings. I would recommend to pause updates first.

Just to be sure, Please try to create restore points so that you can revert back on an earlier date where everything was still working properly in case something went wrong again.

Thank you so much!! This worked perfectly, just another question, should I install the updates that have been queued now or I should just pause them? I don't want to face this problem again. Plus I didn't quite understand what was the cause of this error.

    Again, Thank you so much!!
