Ok, then there would be some issue in that specific update. This is why it was showing the error.

    Thank you and Kind regards.

    Hi there!

I am Shyamak, a Windows user.

This is a common error in Windows updates. Please follow these steps to fix it.

Step 1: Click on Start. Type Notepad, and select Notepad from the list.

Step 2: Please Copy and Paste the following text into Notepad-

    net stop wuauserv

    cd %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution

    ren Download Download.old

    net start wuauserv

    net stop bits

    net start bits

Step 3: Click File, Save As, and type Repair.bat .

Step 4: In the Save As Type drop-down box, select All Files (*.*) .

Step 5: Click on Desktop in the left pane of the Save As dialog box, and then click OK.

    Step 6: Close Notepad.

Step 7: Navigate to the Repair.bat file on your desktop, that we saved on Notepad.

Step 8: Right click on the Repair.bat file, and select Run as Administrator. If asked for permission, allow it or type the password.

Step 9: Now try to install the updates.

Can you now update your computer?

    Kind regards.

I had forgotten to mention one thing:

You can also run the Windows troubleshooter if you can't find an appropriate solution.

For this, please follow these steps:

    1. Click on the Start Button. On the right side of the Start menu, select Control Panel.
    2. In the Control Panel Window, select the drop-down next to View By: and then set it to Large Icons.
    3. Scroll down and double click on Troubleshooting, when you find it.
    4. Click on System and Security, and then Windows Update.
    5. The troubleshooting will start. Follow the steps that it would tell you to do. It would display all the problems that stop you from updating. Once it is completed, please reply with the screenshot of the same.

    Kind regards.

Ok. I had meant the Save option instead of the OK option. So, you had done it right.

As per your reply, I can see that the error code 80246007 has now changed to 80070002. I have searched over the internet, and I found the solution here (if it works for you).

Here is the solution written in this site:

    1. On the Windows desktop, press Start, and when the menu opens up,
    2. Press Run, and input the following command “services.msc”
    3. In the Run box, type "services.msc", and press "Enter".
    4. This will open the "Local Services" window.
    5. In the Local Services window find the name “Automatic Updates” and right click.
    6. On right click, scroll down and press “Stop”. This will cause the Automatic Updates to pause to correct the situation. Do not close the Local Services window.

At this point you can go to the "Software Distribution" folder and delete its contents, or give the folder another name. It is advised that you just rename the folder,

    1. To do this go to the Windows desktop and press “Start” then press “Run” when the menu opens.
    2. Input the “cmd” command into Run, and the computer will take you to the DOS prompt.
    3. At the DOS prompt type in this command “cd %windir%” (without the quotes), and press Enter.
    4. You should now be in the Windows directory.
    5. At the Windows directory, input “ren SoftwareDistribution SoftDisTemp” and hit "Enter". This will rename the Software Distribution folder to the new name of SoftDisTemp.
    6. Type "Exit" and hit "Enter" to close the DOS window.
    7. Now go to the "Local Services" window and right click "Automatic Updates" to restart it.

Can you now update Windows? If the problem still persists, then please reply to the post again.

    Kind regards.

it took me a while but i did do as you instructed. i followed the steps but when i got to step 5) click on desktop in the left pane of save as dialog box you said to click Okay, i did not see anywhere that said okay . there was a save option and that is what i clicked on.  i continued following your instructions and found the file on my desktop and watch the info flash on my screen. i was really hopeful that when i went to update windows with the update i have been trying to update for a while.  so i ran the update again and got that STUPID message that says could not update with the error code 80070002.

i want to thank you for the exact step by step instruction for trying to resolve the windows update because as i stated in my original question i need to have things regarding working on the computer to repair problems with software written out exactly like you did.  i am hoping you have another way to try to solve the error problem.  looking forward to your reply.

    Linda
