Windows Update: One of the update services is not running properly, troubleshooter doesn't work.

My windows update is not working.

It said: "Error encountered. One of the update services is not running properly, but you can try to run a troubleshooter to fix the problem. Go to Start button > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot, and then select Windows Update."

I've tried running the troubleshooter but it didn't fix the problem.

I've also tried to perform a repair upgrade using the ISO but the process failed during installation.

I've tried running SFC /scannow, it said: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Trying to fix the problem with DISM, also failed due to error 2.

Trying to manually start the "Windows Update" from Services yields no result because the service disabled itself after.

It is probably worth mentioning that Windows Defender was previously also disabled, but I managed to enable it by fixing the registry.

Is there another fix I can try?

    Hello yoy0n,

I'm John an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you. I'll be happy to assist you today. I understand you have a problem with Windows update service disabled. Did you made any changes recently? When was the last time you can install windows updates properly?

It looks like something is interfering with Windows update service. Please try to temporary disable or uninstall your Antivirus or anti-malware programs and try to enable Windows update service again.

    **Perform a Clean Boot

Determine whether a background program or a software conflict is interfering with windows update.

Go to the search box > type MSConfig.

Select System Configuration > go to the Services tab.

Select and put a check mark on "Hide all Microsoft services" > Disable all.

Go to Startup tab > Open Task Manager > Disable all the unnecessary services running there. Restart your computer and check for updates,

For more details, please check this support article

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135...

After that you perform clean boot of Windows, Please try to Enable Windows update service then check for updates again.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any further concerns.

    Sincerely

    John DeV

    Hello yoy0n,

Glad that you've found the service that stops windows update service. It can be installed as a software bundle after installing a program before.

You may try to download a free utility called Autoruns for Windows.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autoruns

Unzip it then run Autoruns64 if you have 64bit system. Make sure to run it as Administrator.

Search for any reference to StopUpdates10Guard service, right click and delete.

    Sincerely

    John DeV

    Hello John,

I tried the steps you provided and it worked, my Windows can now perform updates.

However, when I take a look at the services I found this:

I don't recall installing this software and I'm not sure how it was installed.

I cannot find the software that runs this service. Googling it suggests that this service is stopping the Windows Update Service.

Is this something I should be concerned with? Thank you.
