Screen darkens considerably when viewing a dark page

My screen darkens considerably when viewing a dark image or web page, all elements darken, images and user interface. As soon as I navigate to a brighter page, the brightness fades back up again. This has been happening since March 2020.

Windows 10 Home (x64)

AMD Radeon R9 200 / HD 7900 Series [Display adapter] **** Hanns.G HW191 [Monitor]

This is a desktop, not a laptop.

I’ve tried another monitor, same results.

I’ve uninstalled and updated graphics drivers and updated Windows.

Graphics drivers are up to date and the GPU benchmarks okay and shows no on screen glitches

It doesn’t have adaptive display: there are no settings for it in Windows.

There is no adaptive brightness on any power display settings, even on advanced mode.

There don’t appear to be any settings for it on the monitor either (unless I'm missing something, but it didn't do this before March).

There are also no settings for adaptive display in the graphics card software.

There are no on board Intel graphics settings I can access, the machine has an AMD Radeon card.

Registry entries for adaptive brightness do not exist.

How can the display be adapting to ambient light levels when it does doesn’t have this ability?

Good evening and thanks for the advice.

Same thing happens in safe mode. I tried a sys restore and also a reset previously but that didn't help.

I believe that the fact that it still happens when I boot to Linux confirms that is probably not a problem with Windows (which I thought it was, my reason for posting here).

So I had a brain wave. I dug out another old monitor and set up dual monitors with an extended display. The darkening happens on monitor 1, but not if I minimize the page and drag it over to monitor 2, in fact as soon as it partially moves over, the screen lightens again. There is no darkening if the page is maxed on monitor 2.

And if I set my main display to monitor 2 instead, it appears that there is no darkening with that as my main screen, only on the secondary screen which is monitor 1.

Then just for a laugh, I physically switched monitors and now my main monitor is fine and my secondary one darkens.

So its the monitor that is somehow doing this, which is very odd because I've downloaded the manual and it doesn't have this capability, nor any settings to change in this manner. I can only assume it's just faulty!

What is really annoying is that I believed I had already tested another monitor and found the same issue, so had discounted a faulty monitor. However, I now remember that I was actually testing for another graphics related issue at the time (which a second monitor didn't fix) and that the darkening had occurred since then.

So I think I have found my answer, thank you for the help and I apologise for taking your time in that this in the end did not appear to be a windows issue. More of a stupid user/memory issue.

I would be interested to know though how I can access a control panel for the Intel graphics chip if I were to switch to using that. I can't find any settings for it.

    Hello Paloma,

Thank you for the quick response.

    Method 1

Press the Windows + i keys, click System> Video and disable the Automatically change brightness option when lighting changes.

    /video does not exist.

/Display exists, but there is no option to automatically change brightness.

    Method 2

Click the Action Center on the taskbar and click Night Light and disable it:

I never use the night light and yes, it is disabled.

    Method 3

Install the generic video driver and check the result:

This will unload my GPU drivers and load generic Intel drivers, yes?

That will test if my AMD Radeon drivers are causing the issue?

I assume I can then re-load my GPU drivers and update them again with AMD Adrenaline software?

    Thanks.
