Mouse randomly clicks all by itself

I'm running Windows 10 on a Lenovo T460s laptop. The laptop has recently developed this strange problem with the mouse. It's very similar to the problem described in this ticket:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows\_10-performance/cursor-clicks-on-things-randomly-all-by-itself/878e0f10-ee01-449e-afc5-eb657af3d642

The issue reproduces no matter what mouse I use:

  • Logitech bluetooth mouse
  • Logitech wireless USB dongle mouse
  • Microsoft Comfort wired USB mouse
  • The Machine's touchpad

Steps I've taken to troubleshoot the issue:

  • I disabled the touchpad
  • I uninstalled Logitech software which was recommended by Logitech for the bluetooth mouse
  • I updated the driver for the touchpad (it was already up to date)
  • I tried a clean boot (according to the MS support instructions)
  • Bought a new mouse
  • Changed touchpad sensitivity to "low"
  • Uninstalled the driver for the touchpad (synaptics pointing device) - weirdly, when I restarted there was a new device listed in the device manager called "PS/2 compatible mouse" and the touchpad now works again, and I can no longer find the setting to disable it. So, that's strange. But apparently it's now using a Microsoft driver, which was the next thing to try - installing MS generic driver...

I'll try to describe the behavior a little better than the other ticket:

The cursor randomly left-clicks and holds. If I move the mouse when this happens, it drags whatever the cursor was on or it selects text, exactly as if I were holding the left mouse button. It randomly releases, too. Sometimes, it lasts only for a quick second, but sometimes it really gets stuck. When it is stuck, right-clicking usually releases it so I can continue working. Left-clicking doesn't help, I can left-click repeatedly and it doesn't release, when I use the touchpad buttons or the USB mouse buttons. Keyboard actions also don't have any effect on the behavior, as far as I can tell.

    **RESOLVED**

    I was able to resolve the issue by

    • Download & install the latest version of the driver for Synaptics Pointing Device from the Lenovo website
    • Disable the Touchpad in Settings > Devices > Touchpad > Additional settings

    So apparently it was a hardware issue after all. I already tried disabling the touchpad in the initial troubleshooting, but it didn't work. Following the resolution steps from another post resulted in reverting to the Windows OOTB driver for the touchpad, which fixed the issue for the other poster, but not for me. I had to re-install the OEM driver, which I found from Lenovo support site.

    Hello, my name is Carlos Eduardo and I am an independent expert and I came to help in the best possible way. To resolve your problem I ask you to do the steps forward;

    Initially I recommend that you do the following:

    On the desktop, press the Windows + R keys and type: shutdown.exe / r / o / t 0, click OK, click Troubleshooting> Advanced Options> Startup Settings> Restart and when the options for initialization press the number 4 or F4 function key, test the mouse.

    Note: To exit safe mode, restart the equipment.

    If the failure does not occur in a safe mode, try applying the methods:

    Method 1

    Perform a clean boot

    1. On the Desktop, simultaneously press the Windows + R keys to open Run;
    2. When running, type MSCONFIG and click OK to open the System Configuration;
    3. Click Services, check the option Hide all Microsoft services and click Disable All;
    4. Click Apply and Ok;
    5. Restart the computer.

    Method 2

    Uninstall device

    1. On the desktop, press the Windows + X keys and select Device Manager;
    2. Expand the Mouse and other pointing devices section and right-click on the installed device and click Uninstall;

    Tip: Check also in the section USB controllers.

    1. Restart the computer.

    Method 3

    Virus scans

    1. On the desktop, press the Windows + R keys, type: ms-settings: windowsdefender and click OK> Click Open Windows Defender Security Center;
    2. In the Virus and threat protection section, click Run a new advanced scan and use the Full scan and Windows Defender Offline scan options;

    1. Additionally, perform checks with AdwCleaner and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

    Carlos Eduardo, thanks so much for the reply!

    I followed your steps to boot in Safe Mode, but the issue persists there too. Doesn't that rule out Malware?

    BTW I already tried the other steps you mention - clean boot and uninstalling the driver - as well as a few other things mentioned by the community in related issues like these ones:
