How can I get update KB4579311 to install?

Winver shows that my PC is running Windows 10 Version 2004 OS Build 19041.508 and it is 64 based PC.

Update KB 4579311 downloads but installation fails but problem is not identified.  Error 0x800f0831 is mentioned, but I cannot find any solution.

There is also an optional Feature Update to Windows 20H2 but this appears to be dependent on successful insatllation of KB4579311.

Whilst I know enough to be able to use Windows Update my technical knowledge is very limited so I would very much appreciate any suggestions others may have as to how I might resolve the issue.

I should perhaps also mention that when I restarted my PC after the most recent update was installed, a blue screen resulted with the words GETTING WINDOWS READY  DON'T SWITCH OFF YOUR COMPUTER.  Thre was no animation to suggest that any activity was going on so I left the PC in that state for about 75 minutes when it automatically restarted.  I dont know if that is the new "normal" for Windows 10 updates, or if it indicates some other problem.

I look forward to hearing from anyone who can help me.    Thank you.

Michael

Hello, I’m Virginia an independent advisor with 20 years of expertise in fixing my own & friends’ PC problems.

    Which Windows 10 build are you running - 1903, 1909, 2004 or 20H2 (Oct 2020)?

To specify a source you require the Windows installation USB or .iso.

    OPTION 1:

Insert your installation CD or USB. From Admin Command, run:

    1. Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:D:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess

The install.wim file will be in the Sources folder of a mounted Windows 10 ISO.

    1. sfc /scannow

NOTE: may have to run multiple times until you get the message: Windows Resources did not find any integrity violation.

    OPTION 2:

Open the drive where your installation media is and run Setup.exe. Follow the instruction to perform update which actually does a repair.

Thoroughly research any product which is mentioned here before you decide to download and install it.

Hello, Sir - and apologies for bothering you again, but I really do not understand your last message (age is taking its toll!!)

I have had a look at the content of the DISM log file but I am not sure what I am supposed to be looking for.

What is the "Origin" option and how do I use it?  How do I find the location of the files needed to restore the resource when I don't know what those files are?

please keep it as simple as possible.

Thank you very much for your prompt response to my query, Sir.

I dont think the PROXY part is relevant so I did the DISM RestoreHealth procedure.  It reported that it could not find the source file (presumably to repair whatever is worng.  I have no idea what that means, what the name of the source file is or where I can find it.  Is it on my computer, or would I have to download it from somewhere?

Thank I am out of my depth here!!

Hi, I'm Israel M., I'm an independent consultant and I'm happy to help you.

The error code 0x800f0831 on Windows Update could be related to an interruption during the download, which can damage some files. The interruption can be caused by third-party software or a sudden shutdown of your computer. You can download the files again and start your PC cleanly.

    Disable proxy

If you want to disable the proxy, follow the instructions and resolve your issues quickly. You know how to do this:

Press the Windows + R keys on the keyboard to open the "Run" search box on the screen.

In the "Run" search box, type the following command: "inetcpl.cpl.

After making your registration, press the "Enter" button to continue the process.

You can also select the “Connections” option.

Then click on "LAN Settings" to launch it on the screen.

Look for the "Automatically detect settings" option.

Once found, check the box next to "Automatic detection settings" to activate it.

Finally, find the "Proxy Server" option and uncheck the box to disable proxy settings.

Search for and repair corrupted system files

Step 1: Open the command prompt with the right "Admin" button, right click on "Start" and select "Command Prompt (Admin)".

Step 2: At the command prompt, type: dism / online / cleanup-image / restorehealth and press Enter.
