Winsows 10 Update / Background Intelligent Transfer Service troubles

I have recently discovered that my Windows 10 Update will not run, and that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service might be part of the problem.  None of the troubleshooters have helped, nor have any of the on-line fixes,  I'm at a loss.  This has been a problem-free laptop since its purchase in April 2019.

Does anyone else have any ideas?   Thanks.

    Thanks again.

Step 4 did not work.  I noticed the following:

    ***********************************************************

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>%systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore

'C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore' is not recognized as an internal or external command,

    operable program or batch file.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>%systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download

'C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download' is not recognized as an internal or external command,

    operable program or batch file.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>%systemroot%\system32\catroot2

'C:\WINDOWS\system32\catroot2' is not recognized as an internal or external command,

    operable program or batch file.

    ************************************************************************

    Would this have been right?

    Anyway-----

I just found the "installed updates" section in the Control Panel, and it shows that a Windows Update was installed on 11/10, and Security Updates were installed on 11/12 and 11/13, so I presume that the problem is in fact fairly recent.

Any chance it might fix itself?  How long should I maybe wait before I'm at a security risk?

In that case, I would recommend you to try the Windows Media Creation Tool to update your laptop.

Nope, you will not lose everything. The second solution has an option to keep all files and applications after you select "upgrade this pc now". Usually, the second solution solves most of the windows update issues.

    Thanks for your input.

I tried the first solution, "first time" (not doing Step 4) and it did not solve the problem.  After re-starting the PC, the BITS setting is coming back on "manual".  I will try again with Step 4.

Does the second "solution" effectively reset the PC back to factory settings so that I end up losing everything?

    Thanks again.

    Hi JustKeepOnTruckin,

My name is Darren; an Independent Consultant, I'm here to help you with your problem.

Please follow the steps on this guide to reset windows update and try updating again (Take note that you will need to run the command prompt as an administrator):

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deploy...

However, if the issue still persists, you can try using Windows Media Creation Tool to update your pc. (There is an option to keep all files and apps)

Please refer to the following link and click on download tool now under "Create Windows 10 installation media":

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...

After download, run the Media Creation Tool then select "upgrade this pc now" and click on next. It will download the latest window and then install it. But before installation, it will allow you to choose between keep all files and apps, keep all apps only or clean installation.

I hope this helps. If this is not exactly what you need, please explain more so that I can help you better.

    Thanks
