How do I stop my cursor from jumping around? I lose control of the mouse and sometimes it deletes material by itself!

I have a laptop that had touch screen capability. I turned that off and this problem went away, but it has come back. Whether I use the mouse pad or a wireless mouse, even if I am not touching the mouse or the mouse pad, sometimes the cursor jumps and I must stop what I am doing to carefully inspect what data might just have gotten erased.

Hi, JanieLMF I'm an independent advisor, and I'm here to help you.

In regard to your query, there are several things that can be done to fix the problem:

The first thing to do is go to Start> Settings and open the devices section to navigate to the mouse and touchpad settings. Once here, we must enter the Additional Settings or Advanced Options. From here, you can see what settings you have and change them. That can help correct the problem.

Another option is to update the drivers. To do this, do the following:

    1. Press Windows keys + x
    2. Select device manager
    3. From the list select your device, in this case mouse and other pointing devices and display
    4. Right click on it and then update driver
    5. After Search driver automatically

Wait for it to search and repeat that procedure with the touchpad. Then reboot and test.

If it doesn't work, visit the manufacturer's official website, download the required driver there, install it, restart your PC, and check that the issue is resolved.

I hope it can be of help. At your service,

    Jesus C.

I can assure you this is happening with me touching nothing at all. Sometimes it happens when my mouse is in hand or when I am typing. It happened 3x while typing this message! I will look to disable the touch pad. Thank you.

In most cases this is caused by your palm inadvertently brushing over the touch pad. Disabling the touchpad will fix the problem.
