Usb mouse devices not working after disconnecting and reconnecting them a few times.

Initially when I plug a usb mouse device into my laptop it works perfectly fine. If I unplug it then reconnect it, it still works. When I unplug it and replug in a third time it no longer works. This happens to all usb mouse devices in all usb ports on the laptop.  In this state, the mouse shows up in device manager as working but provides no input to the computer until a restart. This also happens in safe mode. I have tried reinstalling all drivers under "mice and other pointing device" and "universal serial bus controllers" in device manager to no avail. This seems to be an issue with generic mouse input as I have a drawing tablet that has a mouse mode. Once I plug it in three times the mouse mode stops working but I can still use it with the pen, even though the mouse mode has its own driver.

Laptop:

msi gs65 stealth thin 8re

Windows 10 pro

Not sure what I can do beyond a fresh install of windows

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

In order to get clarity and to assist you accordingly, please reply with the answers to the questions below:

    • What is the Windows 10 Version and Build installed? (Type winver in Windows search/Run command)

In this scenario, we would suggest you to perform a Software clean boot and then perform in-place repair.

Put the PC in software clean boot, refer the article How to perform a clean boot in Windows. A ‘clean boot’ starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs.

Note:After you finish troubleshooting, follow the sectionReset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting to reset the computer to start normally.

Once the above steps performed, then we would recommend you to download Windows 10 2004 version installation media (ISO) using the media creation tool on the desktop of the PC and then refer this article by PaulSey to run an in-place upgrade.

Note: Please backup your important data that are saved in C drive to any other local drive or external drive before performing In-place upgrade.

Let us know the results. If the issue persists, we will certainly assist you further.
