how to erase a DVD + rw disc

I would like to create a new copy of my previous system repair disc. However, this requires me to erase the disc.

Before, this option was available by "right-clicking" the DVD disc in “This PC” & selecting "erase". Now, there is not any option to "erase" the DVD+RW floppy disc.

Please inform me how I can "erase" the DVD+RW disc within Windows10

    Hello, how are you?

    Welcome to the Microsoft community!

My name is Paloma B., I'm an independent advisor, I'm here to help you in the best possible way.

I understand that I would like to format a DVD + RW.

There are two ways to erase your DVD using Windows 10.

The first form is the one you reported not showing up, right-click on the device and then delete.

In this case, it also has an option at the top, in the Windows Explorer options bar.

Click on the disk to select it and in the top bar the "Manage" tab will appear, if it is not showing, click on the arrow in the right corner to lower the bar.

After that click on the "Tools" tab of the drive that is located under Manage, you will have the option "Erase this disc", check if this way you can erase the DVD.

    I await news.

It was nothing, Dereck, it is a pleasure to be able to help you.

Maybe it is some fault with your W10, let's try some Windows fix procedures.

    SFC, DISM and CHKDSK.

Use the Windows disk, file and image correction tool

    1. On the desktop, press the Windows + X keys, and select Windows Powershell (Admin);
    2. Copy and paste the following commands, one line at a time, followed by Enter:

    sfc /scannow

    dism /online /cleanup-image /CheckHealth

    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    chkdsk /f /r /b

To schedule a disk check, confirm with the S key and press Enter, and restart the equipment.

If the problem persists, perhaps the only option is to perform a backup of your files and perform a clean installation of Windows 10, I believe that this will solve this problem once and for all.

Thank you for your quick reply.

When I have selected the DVD drive,  & clicked on "Manage/Drive Tools", there are displayed 4 options:- Eject/ Finish burning/ Erase this disc/Media. Only the "Eject" icon option is "highlighted. Therefore clicking on the "Erase this disc" has no effect.

I would be very grateful if you can therefore inform me how to get the "Erase this disc" option working.

    Thanks & best regards,

    Dereck Coates.

    Dear Paloma Bianchini,

Thank you again for your quick reply.

Yes, it happens with any DVD, & any other program that asks for a "delete" action.

I suspect that it is something that Microsoft has changed within the W10, one of the many W10 Updates that regularly are initiated on my P.C.

As I stated before. if I "right-click" on the USB logo on the taskbar, & "select" my DVD/MANAGE/DRIVE TOOLS, in the list is "Erase disc", but it is "greyed out", & therefore it is not available. The only option that is active is "Eject".

I have used this "delete" option for may years. Every time I did an "Image Backup" to my H.D., I then always did a "recovery DVD disc", & there was always the "delete" option when I "right clicked" the USB logo on the Task Bar at the bottom of the screen.

Surely there is a solution as to why this "delete" function should work for erasing DVDs.

I look forward to a solution to this problem.

    Thanks & best regards,

    Dereck Coates.

Does this problem happen with all DVD's-RW?

Is it the same with other programs?
