Drive won't be recognized by Windows 10. Toshiba states it's because of a windows 10 update. How do I remedy this problem?

Hello, George I'm an independent advisor and I will try to help you today.

According to your query, first check if the system somehow recognizes the unit. For it:

    1. Press the Windows keys + X at the same time, and from the list that appears select the "Disk Manager"
    2. Then right-click on the drive and select "Change drive letter", assign a letter and check if it already appears in the file explorer.

If it doesn't work, try changing the cable as well, sometimes that causes the problem.

On the other hand, also check that you have your updates up to date,

    1. Press Windows keys + I
    2. Select Update & Security.
    3. Go to the Troubleshooter option.
    4. Select Windows update
    5. Then click on check for updates and then install them and reboot.

    BulldogXX,

No toshiba was not much help.

    Thanks for your reply,

    George

    Understood.

I hope you will understand that "it's because of a windows 10 update" doesn't provide nearly enough detail to diagnose a problem. "It's because of a windows 10 update" is also something that a tech support person will say when they simply don't know how to diagnose a problem, so they take the easy way out and blame Microsoft instead.

Rather than taking a potshot guess, here's something I can recommend that will give you important information about your hard drive: Look for it in the Disk Management snap-in.

To do this, switch to an Administrators account, then press Winkey + X to bring up the WinX menu. There, click on Disk Management, which shows you a display of the drives available to Windows. Your external hard drive should have the label 'Healthy.'

I also have a 1 TB Toshiba external hard drive (Canvio) and my computer is completely up to date. Windows 10 has no problem recognizing my drive.

Did Toshiba tell you which Windows 10 update is allegedly causing your problem, and exactly what the problem is?
