Can't open Photoshop after latest Windows 10 update

Hi, I have an old version of Photoshop 6.0.1 which now won't open after a Windows update today. I get an error that says 'sorry unable to continue because of a hardware or system error, sorry but this error is unrecoverable'.

Asking on the Adobe help pages, people re saying to just use an old version of Windows, but this doesn't work as I would have to update eventually. The trouble shooter also does not work.

I am wondering if anyone else had this problem and it they have found a workaround, or is this a bug that Microsoft might fix before I go and buy a newer version of Photoshop?

Thanks.

Lisa.

Great news everyone.  There is a fix for this problem, and pretty simple.  Just left click on  Photoshop 6 .exe, then click Properties, go to the Compatibility tab and change the compatibility to Windows 98.  I did that and now my Photoshop 6 is up and running again.  Cheers...

Same problem here.  Photoshop 6 worked perfectly before the huge Windows 10 update on 11-13-2020.  Now it won't  open.  At all.  This is totally a Microsoft programming error, so don't try pretend Adobe needs to fix it.  Thousands of Photoshop users, who paid millions of dollars for this product, are now finding the product completely useless. So step up Microsoft.  Fix the problem you created.

An update:  I have restarted my computer and the solution sticks, so changing the compatibility to Windows 98 is the solution.

Same here. I gave up though as I need to use Photoshop and there seems to be no solution. Yesterday I downloaded a 30 day free trial of Photoshop Elements 2020 to try. It is kind of the same as Photoshop 6. After 30 days I will have to buy it. It is not too expensive though, $145 here in Australia to buy it outright. I prefer this to a monthly subscription. You can download the trial from the Adobe website if you wanted to try it too.

It's a shame we can no longer use PS6, it did everything I needed to do, I didn't need anything fancy!

Changing the compatibility to Windows 98 worked for me. I haven't restarted my computer, so I don't know if the solution will stick, but this is progress and looks promising. Thank you!
