Headphones work only after restarting with headphones plugged in

I have a Dell laptop running Windows 10 with Realtek audio driver (version v6.0.8838.1 (A09) which is the latest).  When I plug in my headphones after booting up, the headphones have no sound and the speaker remains on.  If I restart after plugging the headphones in, the headphones work fine and the speaker is off.  Then if I unplug the headphones, the speaker comes back on and plugging the headphones in again changes nothing -- speaker on, headphones silent.  In the sound settings, headphones don't appear in either case.  Any ideas on how to fix this problem? I tried with installing new driver, play around with setting of sounds, enable Realtek/ Waves MaxxAudio Service Application but it doesnt work.

Thanks for your help

    Hi Carlo,

Thanks for your advice but when doing that, the headphone is still not detected.

But I found the way to solve the problem, I go to the task manager and disable the Waves MaxxAudio Service Application and now I can use the headphones. I think there might be conflict between Realtek and Waves MaxxAudio.

    Best regards,

    Kim

    Hi Carlo,

Thanks for your reply. I did try to select the audio output after I plug in and unplugging my headphones but it does not work. In deed, when I plug or unplug my headphones, there is no change in the sounds setting, the headphones do not appear in the list of devices, look like it's not recognized (My headphones are working fine, I tested with different laptops). I don't think there is physical damage with the 3.5mm jack as if I restart the laptop with the headphones plugged in, I still can hear the sound and the problem happens when I use the 3.5mm jack of the dock as well.

So I think there is some conflicts in the application but could not find out.

I have tried all the troubleshooting steps in the link you provided but it does not work.

    Best regards,

    Kim

I'm sorry to hear that those steps did not work for you. Can you try to disable front panel jack detection and check if this will work.

    > Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Find Realtek HD Audio Manager then double click it.

    > Go to Device Usage > Click Don't use this device (disable)

Plug in your headphones and see if it will be detected. If it did, try enabling Realtek again and then test if your headphones will still work.

    Hi Kim,

My name is Carlo, I'm an Independent Advisor and community member like you.

I am also using Windows 10. Let us work together to sort this out.

May I know if you have tried to select the audio output after plugging in or unplugging your headphones? Can you try to check that your audio is playing to the audio device you prefer, such as a speaker or headphones from the system tray?

Please check on this link more troubleshooting steps your can try to resolve this issue: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/fix...

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

    Warm regards,

    Carlo T.
