If you're referring to built-in Remote Desktop Connection, it uses your IP address, Account Name and password to sign in.

If you have problems then I'd use one of the free 3rd party remote apps TeamViewer or AnyDesk which work better and have less problems. See a comparison here:

I switched to TeamViewer years ago after struggling with Remote Desktop, and never had another problem. Any Desk works just as well.
