Opening Files in MARKDOWN format

I have some files with the extension .MD which are in MARKDOWN format. They can be opened with the TEXT EDITOR, though when I go to SETTINGS > DEFAULT APPS, there is no option to set the TEXT EDITOR as the default program - instead I'm taken to the Microsoft store. How do I set the TEXT EDITOR as the default program for this file extension?

Right-click a .MD file, & select (or point to) "Open with". Ensure "Always use this app..." is checked, then select Notepad & click OK. If Notepad is not in the list, click the "More apps" button...

Type "Feedback Hub" into Search. Then search for a similar complaint & upvote it, or add a new complaint of your own. I'll upvote it too, if you find or write a good one, & post a link to it here.

You are right. They need to improve things at Default Apps. Glad to have helped.

It would be good if you could do this from within DEFAULT APPS, rather than having to go through this round-about method.
