About Local Disk C Capacity.

Hi!

I have a laptop with Windows 10, which has a 128GB SSD as the system drive. It shows its capacity as 119GB (That's ok). But, the total size of drive “C" shows as 100GB. In the “Disk Management Window”, it shows that the SSD has divided into 5 parts and there are three “Recovery partitions (1.06GB, 1.55GB, 14.93GB)” have been created.  In the "Settings ->  System -> Storage menu", it shows that 57GB out of 119GB as the "used space" on "C" drive. (including the missed 19GB space).

My question is, why it takes such a big capacity (14.93GB) for a “Recovery partition” and what’s the importance of those “recovery partitions”?

Should I maintain 10%-20% of free space in “C” drive yet Or can I use 100% of “C” drive space without making the system unstable?

    Hi Tharindu

Rest assured, merging that partition will have no affect on Windows 10 licensing, with regards to drivers, Windows 10 updates will install those for you automatically, you do not need to worry about those

The ell utilities can always be downloaded form the support page for your PC on the Dell website at any time . . .

Thank you very much for helping me.

but, I have another little problem.

The Windows that I have installed is a Genuine one. If I merge this 14.93GB partition to the "C" drive and then reinstall windows 10, will my genuine license be cancelled? And the all device drivers need to be downloaded separately from the internet?

Is there any methods to copy only those Drivers files and Dell utility tools from that partition to my another drive and then delete and merge this partition with drive "C"?

    Hi Tharindu

I am Dave, an Independent Advisor, I will help you with this . . .

A 128GB SSD has a usable area of 119.1GB approx.

That 14.93GB partition is the Dell Factory Image, it contains a Windows installation, all device divers and all Dell Utilities, that can be used to restore your PC to factory settings, should you ever need to

Depending on how old your system is, or how many Feature Updates you have applied to Windows, that partition may now be obsolete, because Windows 10 contains a separate reset option built-in to the operating system

If that is the case, you would need to use a 3rd party utility to delete that partition and merge that to your C drive partition, because Windows has limited partitioning capability

Yes, an SSD must never be full you need a good percentage of free space, generally 20% so that drive is at optimum performance and also to prolong the life of the SSD
