So long story short I messed up (as always) and ended up opening the Create Desktop Shortcut.DeskLink with Notepad and now it won't appear in the Send To dropdown menu. Anyway to restore the default app it opens with? Or at least what is the default app this file extension opens with?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi A,

    My apologies that didn't work. Can we check the actual key in Regedit. Here's how:

    1. Open Regedit
    2. Go to this path: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\UserLibraryFolder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
    3. Trying it on my computer, Under ContextMenuHolders, I have 5 folders under it.

    The first 3 have alpha numeric names, 4th one is named CopyAsPathMenu and last folder is SendTo

    1. Click on SendTo, double click on default from the right side. It should open the value of the current key.

    The value should be this one: {7BA4C740-9E81-11CF-99D3-00AA004AE837}

    If that is not the current value. Please copy the value including the braces.

    You may also reset the file associations by default. Here's how:

    1. Open Settings, go to Apps
    2. Select Default apps
    3. Click Reset button under Reset to the Microsoft Recommended Defaults

    I also checked under default apps by file type and mine doesn't have a default app for the filetype .desklink.

    Anyway, let me know how it goes.

    To remove the notepad file association just download the linked registry file, unzip and double click to merge. For the change to take effect, open Task Manager, scroll down to Windows Explorer and right click Restart.
