Set C to be Windows OS only, no programs, no temp files.

Hi! Im not sure if this was posted, but I wasnt able to find it thru google.

Basically I want to use my m2 C drive ONLY for Windows OS. I dont want any user setting, any user folder (documents, pictures, videos, etc.) in my C drive. also want all programs to go to another folder in another drive. is this possible?

The reason behind this is because I use some software that for some reason take up my C drive and fills it up, even when I already have everything outside of the C drive (temp files, scratch disks, cache, etc.) and I only want Windows to manage the C drive, so no other programs fills it up with unwanted temporal files or any other kind of stuff.

ps. I already got rid of TEMP folder, cache folder, app data folder, paging files and etc. from the C drive, but still gets filled by the software whenever I open my projects. So I think its because the software its installed on the C drive (because its the fastest drive I have)

    Hi MARIANCE95

I am Dave, an Independent Advisor, I will help you with this . . .

It is not really possible to do this, it is possible to move a lot of software and most of your data to another drive, but some software installers, specifically 3rd party installers will not allow you to install software to another non-system drive, and also Microsoft Office must be installed to the system drive

Also, it should be kept in mind, if your C drive is an SSD and you have a large HDD that you use for data, it is better to keep software installed on the SSD, because the software will execute faster

Here is the best way to set up a system with a small system drive and large data drive (I have assumed the other drive is D if not, replace D with the correct drive letter) . . .

    1.

Move all your User Library folders to D:

    Open Windows File Explorer

In the right hand pane, right click your Documents folder and choose Properties

    Select the Location tab

In the Location box, type D:\Documents then click Apply and Ok

When that move completes, do the same for Pictures, Videos and Music

Each time, provide a new folder location, for example, Pictures will go to D:\Pictures

    2.

Move the location of all future content downloaded from the Microsoft Store

Open the Settings App (gear icon on your Start Menu)

Go to System - Storage - Change where new content is saved:

Change all options you find there to D

Also, for any Apps or games that you may have downloaded, go to Settings - Apps, then select that game or App and there may be a Move option . .

    3.

If you are a Steam Gamer

Stop all processes associated with Steam

Move the Steam folder to your D drive manually

Then open the Steam Control Panel and point that to the new location

    4.

Please Note: this should ideally be done before you begin installing any software

For 3rd party applications, some will allow you to choose an installation location, for those, create a new Program files folder on your D drive, then for each application, create a new sub-folder of that folder

Other 3rd party applications will not allow you to change the installation location, and there is no safe way to move those to your D drive . . .

You can move your OneDrive folder to your other drive.  Then when you enable the OneDrive PC Folder Backup for Documents, Desktop, and Pictures, those folders will move to OneDrive located on your other drive.  But that may fill up your OneDrive space quickly and you would have to purchase more space.

You can move your user files elsewhere but you cannot move your program folders.

Use this free tool to find out what is eating your disk space:
