Wireless mobile mouse 3500 completely unresponsive

The red light was flashing slowly. Now there is no light at all & the mouse is completely unresponsive. The blue light underneath comes on when it's switched on but that's it. Things I have tried that have not worked:

changed the battery- twice

uninstalled the receiver & reinstalled

restarted the laptop

installed the drivers from this page

tried the trouble shooting options listed on this page

tried to re-pair with the button under the mouse

checked windows updates

troubleshooted the receiver & mouse in the devices section- no problems detected

Tried different usb port - no difference (they are all working)

There is nothing new in my house that would be interferring with it & the mouse hasn't been dropped or fallen.

Nothing has worked. Is there anything else I can try or is it completely dead? This mouse is only 2 years old! I can't really afford to buy another right now & struggle using the mouse pad on my laptop.
