Resident Evil 7 (STEAM) (PC) Issue | Game Crashes Upon Boot

Hello, this error message above keeps popping up when I try to launch RE7, then it crashes. I'm pretty sure my computer can run the game, but it does have an Intel graphics card. Anything I can do to solve this? I've tried reinstalling the game from steam already, with no luck.

I have DirectX version 12 too.......

    PC Specs:

    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1035G1 CPU @ 1.00GHz   1.19 GHz

    Intel(R) UHD Graphics

    RAM: 8GB

    Version: Windows 10 Home (20H2)

(the game is still crashing when I try to boot it, with the same error message. I am using DirectX version 12 so I tried to install 11 to no avail.

"In the main menu the game is not laggy at all, suggesting that my PC can probably handle the game."

    • An incorrect assumption unfortunately. There is very little load on the gpu in a games FMV intros, and virtually none

    in the setup screens.

You can see this in the very high frame rates in many games that don't limit the frame rates during the intro FMV and setup screens.

The building of a 3D environment when you load the actual game is when a load is put on the gpu.

    • I wouldn't think the game checking for updates, etc should cause the game to crash though.

If you have a decent internet speed it shouldn't normally get stuck doing that check, but there is a possibility the game is also

trying to detect a suitable gpu\cpu at that time, and it may get stuck when it cannot find them.

    • As I mentioned previously, if your cpu is not boosting above 1.19 GHz, it has little or no chance of running a game with

a minimum system requirement of 2.7GHz cpu.

    • While it may also show a minimum cpu with a 2.4GHz clock speed on the system specs sites, I reckon the Resident Evil HD Remaster

of the original RE would run with your hardware.

The difference here is they are using fairly modern cpu models as a guide for an very old updated game, vs a completely new

version of the game, so the minimum specs for the newer RE's would be more accurate.

You can get RE HD Remaster and the prequel Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster for $10- USD or less when on sale.

The RE HD Remaster is well done (I played the original on PS, and the remaster recently on PC)

    • btw, I only mentioned System File Checker as more background info in relation to DX12, but that didn't apply directly to this game

    as it uses DX11.

I tried running SFC /scannow, and it found corrupted files & fixed them, so I restarted my PC but the issue still remains. With the error message box open I can still interact with the game (without it crashing) but once I try to start a new game, it starts checking for downloadable content and just gets stuck there. In the main menu the game is not laggy at all, suggesting that my PC can probably handle the game.

"I'm pretty sure my computer can run the game, but it does have an Intel graphics card."

    • Unfortunately being 'pretty sure' is not good enough. What model Intel HD graphics does your machine use ?

If it's an old machine with Intel HD2000\3000 graphics it definitely not compatible as this version of Intel HD

    can only use DirectX 9 & 10, and RE7 uses DX11 effects.

The error mentions failing to create ComputeShader, which is a DX component.

Another potential issue is the game requires 2GB VRAM.

Integrated graphics use part of the system RAM and while the mfg's of laptops use the term Video RAM, integrated graphics

    has no dedicated VRAM.

Some games are quite happy to use the system RAM, but some more system intensive games need both VRAM and system RAM.

If the game is able to run on Intel HD graphics you would need to be using low graphics settings and resolution for it to be playable.

"I have DirectX version 12 too......."

     - DirectX confuses many people.  Win10 has DX9,10,11 & 12 effects, but many people only look in

dxdiag (Directx Diagnostics) System tab, which shows the highest DX level Win10 is capable of using

(Win10 is the only version of Windows that can use DX12 effects).

People need to look in the  Displaytab > Feature Levels , which is where you can see which version of DX

your graphics processor is capable of using.

In this instance  you need a graphics processor with  Feature Level - 11_0\11_1 or higher to run the game.

(To open dxdiag - R\click on the start button and type dxdiag into the Run command to open directx diagnostics)

"I am using DirectX version 12 so I tried to install 11 to no avail."

Re-read my first post. I have added bold to the main points to make it easier for you.

The game uses DX11 and your Intel UHD graphics is capable of using DX11, but the processor is low end and not intended

for games with high end graphics. Note it is the game that selects which DX files it uses, not Windows and not the user.

If Win10 had only DX12 the vast majority of games would not run on Win10.

Five years after the release of Win10 there are still only a relatively small number of DX12 games, but the trend is starting to pickup.

    • I can add another issue that is at least as important. If you cpu's clock speed has been capped by the

mfg of your laptop @ a lowly 1.19GHz boost speed it is woefully inadequate for this, and many other games.

The  i5-1035G1  has potential for a 3.6GHz boost clock speed, so if there is a way to change that in your machine BIOS

you may be able to at least run the game with the Intel UHD model used by the i5-1035G1.

Of course raising the boost speed will also create more heat, which may cause problems as the machine may not have

adequate cooling capacity for higher boost speeds.

    • In the event that a DX file gets corrupted the installer pack below is what you would use to reinstall DirectX 9,10 & 11.

But that is not likely your problem with this game.

There is no stand alone installer for DX12, and I don't know how Win10 users would fix a corrupted DX file should that happen

(maybe with System File Checker ?)

Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - DirectX Redist (June 2010)
