Best monitor technology for low vision for reading words? IPS? HDR? 4k?

I work on the computer a lot-- reading and writing. I struggle with my vision.

I wondered if I am better off with a midrange HDR monitor vs. a 4K IPS monitor? I heard HDR is good for black and white so I am assuming I may see text better with that technology vs a 4K resolution? art of my confusion is that I don't understand the pixel count associated with the 3 levels of HDR technology and whether they would be clearer than a 4K IPS monitor ?

Also, my font size is set at 125%. But can I lower that font size on my desktop file names?

thanks,

Debbie.

Debbie, you're welcome. I am happy that I could help you somehow.

I agree with you that you don't need a 4K monitor, maybe a Full HD will suit you better. And is less expensive also!

About the refreshing rate, a higher refresh rate means a smoother-looking screen that is easier on the eyes. For the average users dealing with eye strain, a refresh rate of 120 Hz is optimal. There is absolutely no need to pursue those high-end 144 Hz or 240 Hz monitors you can find on Amazon or at Best Buy. Unless you’re doing heavy gaming or video watching/editing, you will most likely not be able to see the difference between 120 Hz and anything higher.

Please let me know if I can help with something else.

Thank you for your kind reply!

Hi Debbie, my name is Felipe Lucas, Independent Advisor and Microsoft Windows user like you.

I'll be happy to help you.

The more pixels an image contains, the higher precision and more detail it shows. Resolution is the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed.

    • Full HD means 1920*1080 resolution.
    • 4K means a horizontal resolution of 4096*3112.
    • Ultra HD is usually slightly less than 4K and is at 3840*2160 resolution.

4K and HD are talking about the resolution, but High Dynamic Range (HDR) is the range of tones in the video.

A lot of detail is lost when recordings are shown on regular TV’s as the screen is unable to display a full spectrum. HDR screens provide a wider range of brightness and colors making the video more realistic.

IPS produces much higher display quality, with better colors and much better viewing angles. But it is more suitable for photographers, graphic designers, arts, etc).

So, in your case I would choose an HDR monitor because it will affect the color contrast, which will make your reading easier. But you can still find a 4K HDR monitor, since 4k stand for resolution and HDR for the range of tones.

I also recommend that you search for Eye Care Monitors. When choosing the best monitor for eye strain you must think of that as your primary concern and view the specifications of each potential monitor through that lens.

About the second issue, when you change Windows font size to 125% it changes globally. What I recommend is that you change your icons size

In case you think they are too big.

You can see how to do that in the link below:

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and refers to the accuracy of the colors on the monitor. That won't help you to read words.

4K is the monitor's native resolution. A 4K monitor's text will look very small to you. You don't want that.

IPS (In-Plane Switching) is a technology used to display images that allows for a wider viewing angle than its predecessor, TN. (I forgot what that stands for.) It's got nothing to do with your ability to read words.

On my computers I go Settings, System, Display, Scale & layout and make it 150%

There are some games & programs that need it to be at 100% so I just change it and when finished I change it back to 150%.
