Computer works in Safe Mode but "crashes" just before login screen

Hey All,

Thanks in advance for reading about my issue.

PROBLEM:

This issue has happened three or four times now over the past year and a half and what I did to "fix" it previously, didn't work the following times. I've attached a screencap from my phone of what I see when the issue happens. The screen just changes to the vertical lines and I can't do anything. Nothing seems to work aside from a forced reboot. Before it was kind of random when it happened, very infrequent and impossible to recreate.

The first time this happened, I don't know exactly what "fixed" the issue but everything seemed to be back to normal after running all the tests/scans mentioned below.

The time after that, I just did a reinstall of Windows after a tech guy from a company called 'Nerds on Site' couldn't figure out the issue and just recommended this action.

The last time, I restored from a previous point and that seemed to correct the issue for a while.

Now, I can't even get to the login screen before this happens. Sometimes, just a flash of it and then the coloured screen with vertical lines. I've tried what feels like everything, I'm at a complete loss and definitely feeling defeated.

*System info and Troubleshooting are after the image.

Here's the closeup view of what happens when things go wrong:

The colour doesn't matter, that seems to just be dependant on whatever the desktop image's colours are.

SYSTEM:

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3240 CPU @ 3.40GHz   3.39 GHz

RAM 16.0 GB

64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

OS: Edition Windows 10 Pro / Version 20H2 / Build 19042.685

Display: AMD Radeon R9 200 Series

Sound: AMD High Definition Audio Device

Sound: Realtek High Definition Audio

Hard Drive: NTFS, 463.73GB, Not compressed

Malware: Malwarebytes

AntiVirus: Avast

Nothing new installed lately (software nor hardware)

TROUBLESHOOTING:

  • Checked around a gazillion articles online;
  • Restored from a previous point;
  • Checked that Windows and all drivers are up to date;
  • Ran several system file check (SFC) scans and repair system files;
  • Ran DISM (checkhealth/scanhealth);
  • Unplugged external hard drives and fans;
  • Changed Resolution on Monitor (I'm trying anything over here);
  • Looked for the "Minidump" folder, but it wasn't there (saw this in an article);
  • Did a Clean Boot and unchecked all services;

I can get into my computer via Safe Mode with Networking and I have run the above scans as well. Checking the CBS.log file for "corrupt" I found this three times: Failed to clear CorruptionDetectedDuringAcr store corrupt flag (slow mode trigger). [HRESULT = 0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND]. After searching on Google, none of the solutions worked.

I can't replicate the issue in Safe Mode.

Any advice would be incredibly helpful so that I can actually pinpoint the exact problem!

THANK YOU!

    Hi Ryan_Mayer -

    Yes, you can out the ISO file on your USB drive, just follow the steps inside the link I provided. Also, if you are having trouble downloading the ISO file on the link I provided, you can try the method that you have in mind.

    Thanks, Jerico, however, I don't have a disk drive, so would putting the ISO file onto a USB still work fine? Also, since I couldn't get the file by using the Media Creation Tool, should I follow this page:

    How to Download the Latest Windows 10 ISO Files Directly Using Your Web Browser

    https://windows10.help/blogs/entry/24-how-to-download-the-latest-windows-10-iso-files-directly-using-your-web-browser/

    This one was written back in 2017, should I be using a newer page?

    Would it be easier to download the file using my wife's Mac instead of changing the User-Agent String? Changing the User-Agent String didn't provide any different options on https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 I still only get the Update option or the Installation Tool that doesn't seem to work.

    Hi Ryan_Mayer -

    Thank you for your quick response. I see, if that's the case, try Custom Install, a process wherein you will reinstall windows (latest version) on your computer using an ISO file and once the setup is done, you can recover your personal data/files on Windows.old folder. If you wish to proceed, please click the link below.

    Hi Jerico,

    Thanks for the very quick response! Greatly appreciated!

    So I've followed your steps but couldn't get past the Media Creation Tool. I received the error: "There was a problem running this tool". I am in Safe Mode with Networking and of course, followed the instructions provided. I have a 16GB USB plugged in and this is where I was going to save the file. I've tried three times now without any luck. I even tried to create an ISO but that too threw up the same error. The Error Code is: 0x8007043C - 0x90018.

    I came across this article to see if it could help:

    How to Download Official Windows 10 ISO files Using Media Creation Tool or Directly Using your Web Browser

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-windows_install-winpc/how-to-download-official-windows-10-iso-files/35cde7ec-5b6f-481c-a02d-dadf465df326

    And I also tried to do what's in this article as well (what I could from Safe Mode):

    Fix: Media Creation Tool error 0x8007043C – 0x90017 on Windows 10

    https://www.howtoedge.com/fix-media-creation-tool-error-0x8007043c-0x90017-windows-10/

    /scannow results:

    Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

    For online repairs, details are included in the CBS logfile located at

    windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline

    repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.

    What else can I try?

    Hi Ryan_Mayer -

    I'm Jerico T., one of the Independent Advisor and a fellow Windows 10 user like you. I understand that you're having some issues right now, let us sort things out.

    Just to clarify, the issue does not occur on safemode? If so, let's try the steps below and check if it will resolve the issue.

    1. Boot your computer in safemode, click the link below

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/sta...

    In safemode, perform the steps below.

    In-Place Repair

    • In-place repair/upgrade or repair reinstall is a process of re-installing Windows without touching any of your applications or personal files. In this way if there's any data corruption, damaged system files or missing system files on your computer, this repair will fix or repair them.

    To start we need to download an ISO file of Windows 10 and save it to your computer. Please follow the instruction on the link below to create an ISO file

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/402819...

    After the ISO is created, follow the instructions on the link below created by PaulSey, Microsoft Agent, on how to perform repair install on your computer.

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

    This process will take some time to complete so you need to be very patient in waiting until the process completes. Once done , restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.

    Feel free to reach us back if you need further assistance.

    Hope this help. Have a good day.

    Thank you.

    Jerico T.
