In computer hardware, a 'peripheral' is hardware that is not part of the core functionality of the computer. It can be a subtle concept. For example, the CPU, RAM and internal hard drives are clearly part of the core functionality of a computer, and are not peripherals. On the other hand, a printer, sound card and network card are considered peripherals, because a computer can operate successfully without them.

The term 'audio peripheral' could refer to any peripheral that produces audio, such as speakers or a sound card or sound chip.

    Hi David,

I'm Benedict, an Independent Advisor. I'm here to help you.

Kindly try to check if there are enabled audio devices or what device is set to default in Sounds > Playback tab, or to locate this:

    1. Right-click on Speaker icon in the right-side of your taskbar and select Sounds.
    2. Click Playback tab.
    3. If no audio devices show, right-click and make sure the option "Show Disabled devices" is checked.
    4. If audio devices are now visible, right-click on the speaker and select Enable.
    5. To make it default, right-click on it again and select Set as Default device.

Please let me know how it goes.

    Regards,

    Benedict P.

    Hi David -

I'm Kevin B. Independent advisor and a Windows user like you. I do apologize for the inconvenience that you experiencing right now, let me help you sort things out.

Have you tried using an old driver on your computer where it was working properly? When you inherited that laptop, did you perform re-installation of windows?

    Roll back Audio driver

    • If updating the driver did not resolve the issue, you can try to roll back the driver to a previous version of it.
    1. Open the device manager by pressing the Windows Key + R then type devmgmt.msc and press enter.
    2. Device Manager will open, locate and Expand Audio, Video and Game Controllers
    3. Right click on the sound driver that you have and select update driver
    4. Select Browse my computer for driver software
    5. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer
    6. List of drivers installed on your computer before will be displayed, select any older driver from the list and hit Next until completion
    7. Close the device manager and check if your sound is working

Hope this will help and have a bless day!

    Thanks.

    Hi Benedict.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I have tried the settings you suggested. After right click of the mouse my options were. "Open sound settings" "speaker setup unknown" "troubleshoot sound problems." I went open sound settings and up came the settings on sound. Under the "choose your output" the drop down menu only said "no output devices found." Under input devices it said the same. So no further. Does this mean I have to buy something as I have inheritedthis old laptop from my wife who onlynever used it for spreadsheets etc. Now I wish to use it for music as its size etc is ideal for my writing composing etc. Thank you. David Fletcher
