COM Surrogate stopped working (problem related to ESENT.dll?)

Hi, I don't know if anyone can help me, this is obviously a very technical issue beyond my understanding.

Reliability History is showing hundreds of instances of COM Surrogate stopping working. At the same time this happens, I tend to experience general PC slowness, particularly with the start menu, and sometimes blue screening. Other problems also pop-up in Reliability History for things that have stopped working such as DllHost.exe (often many at the same time), svchost.exe_BITS, and Background Intelligence Transfer Service. They nearly always mention ESENT.dll as the Fault Module Name.

If anyone has any suggestions as to how to solve it I'll be really grateful! I'm on Windows 10.

This is what appears in Reliability History if I click on one of the 'COM Surrogate' reports -

    Hi Prakhar,

Thanks a lot for your reply.

    I'm using Windows 10, 64 bit, 2004. OS Build 19041.630

I made no changes to Windows prior to that event happening, although bluescreening and other errors have been occurring for months so it's hard to say.

I've followed all of the instructions - booting in Safe Mode was fine, as was doing a Clean Boot. With no single problem occurring continuously, it's hard to pin-point the cause of anything but hopefully over time if I keep half of services disabled, if a problem occurs then I might be able to get an idea of the cause.

The files in MiniDump only go back so far... I assume they delete themselves automatically? The bluescreening has continued to occur on occasion however, e.g. one on the 15th Jan which occurred immediately after I turned the PC on.

    Here's the link: https://1drv.ms/u/s!Avy9kWefiySQiQw2vnFZUXYnuBSg?e=RqF0o3

(3 dump files wouldn't upload for some reason. The two that would upload are there).

Thank you again for your help, I really appreciate it.

    Regards,

    Matt

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that you’re facing issues on your PC, and I certainly appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue.

We will certainly look into this for you.

For further clarity on the issue, please respond to the questions below:

    1. Which build version of Windows 10 are you using currently?
    2. Are you aware of any changes made to the PC prior to which you weren’t facing this issue?

Refer the article Which version of Windows operating system am I running?

Meanwhile, I would suggest you to try booting the PC in Safe Mode and see if it freezes. Refer the article Start your PC in safe mode in Windows 10

If the PC is not freezing in Safe Mode, then try booting the PC in Clean Boot and see if the PC crashes. Refer the article How to perform a clean boot in Windows

Performing a clean boot will start the computer with minimal set of drivers and programs, to determine whether a background program is causing the issue. Some of the Startup programs will not load after performing a clean boot on the computer. However, that functionality will return when you reset the computer to start normally after finishing the troubleshooting.

If the PC doesn’t freeze after performing Clean Boot, then please refer the section How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean bootto identify the root cause of the issue.

Note: Please refer the section Reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshootingto boot the computer in to normal mode after troubleshooting

Regarding Blue Screen issue, it would be great if you could upload the files on OneDrive and share the link to us. If we can analyze the dump file, we may be able to narrow down the cause of the error. The Dump files are located in C:\Windows\MiniDump folder.

Let us know if you need any further assistance, we will be glad to assist you.

    Regards,

    Prakhar Khare
