I already posted this sollution somewhere but I could not find it anymore...

So, I got my store working again after 4 weeks of try hard.

First the sollution in German Language, after that I will try to translate it:

    Microsoft Store Fehler 0x80073cf9 beheben:

So, the company I bought the PC from installed Windows in a basic English Version and changed (almost) every language setting to German.

To install, they needed some starting account they delete after your setting up windows for your needs. But the basic account remains on your Computer somehow hidden with the wrong language settings, so microsoft store blocks you from updates.

Yes I know this was not a translation, but a explanation, and here is where you have to click in the german Version of Windows:

Start - Settings - Time and Language - Language - administrative language options (on the right side of your screen) - Region - Settings (??) - Copy Settings - there are 2 checkboxes there you need to klick and after this Windows will need to restart.

After the reeboot your MS Store should be working again. With the above method you copy your language settings to the "hidden" system manufacturer account aswell. This was set to english and I could not change it with other methods because you do not have access to the account after you make your own account.

Maybe please someone can look up the exact settings and menu names in the english version and translate them? I just guessed the names of the settings :)

Good luck to you all with this error in MS Store. Mine is now working flawlessly!

    Hi Max,

I'm David, an Independent Advisor, here to help you.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused by this problem.

Thanks for the procedures already taken to try to solve it.

Some system files may be missing or corrupted. Do the following to correct this.

    • On the Start Menu, type cmd;
    • Right-click on "Command Prompt" and select "Run as administrator".

Run the following commands at the Command Prompt one at a time:

    dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth

    dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

    sfc /scannow

Restart the pc and see if the problem is solved.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions.

I have the exact same Problem, I am also on Windows Pro 20H2.

My Laptop is on Windows Home 2004 and it works fine on my laptop.

Already tried pretty much every sollution which was mentioned in this thread since I am working on this problem now since like 2 weeks or so.

Its sad because I just bought Forza Horizon 4 and the game was rather expensive, but I cant (and dont want to) play it on my laptop.

Yesterday a support guy from microsoft tried to fix it with remote access for 3 hours (!!!), did pretty much all the same steps as I did (was creating a new local user account mentioned before?) but with no luck. Last resort will be format c: but I read on some forums that even that did not help some people. Yes, this error code is wide spread it seems, since many years now, why does microsoft not look into this?

Why I think this is wide spread? Well, who actually does open the microsoft store to update calculator or the other built in apps? No one. If they have the problem people will only notice when they bought a game from Microsoft, like Forza,  Sea of Thieves or Flight Sim. In the forums there you can also read lots of people having the same issue, but the reports are so wide spread across so many forums, so I think it is not recognized from Microsoft to be a problem with windows...

Oh well, setting the Encryption Bit in registry like mentioned here

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/microsoft-store-error-code-0x80073cf9-solution/faec6b54-339d-4ad7-bda8-9573d7bd6c0a

did not work for me either, because it was already set to "0".
