WHite background displays as light green/blue

All of a sudden my Windows 10 laptop has started displaying white backgrounds in Explorer and the browser etc as a sort of light blue/green tint instead of white.

Note that as far as I can tell it only does it for pure white (ie. 0xFFFFFF), where there is an almost white, such as the shadow around windows, it displays properly.

Any suggestions as to what could be happening here?

PS. I tried checked the "Colors" registry settings in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\Colors and they are both "255 255 255"

I did check color filters to see if they had been changed somehow, but they were all off. Ditto color management. And it wasn't the night light either since that was off during the day.

Nor was it the monitor since when I plugged in an external monitor (via the HDMI output) it looked the same.

However, as it happens it seems to have fixed itself. When I switched on the computer this morning it was all working normally. No update was installed yesterday/this morning so not sure why or how it fixed itself!

    Hi Greg,

    Here is the screenshot:

I think the area around your message is actually white, but it appears blue/green to me as shown in this photo:

It is almost as if the display driver is mapping just that one color?

Laptop monitors don't have the wires and connectors that make troubleshooting easier for a standalone monitor. But there are certain esoteric possibilities you can check:

Are you using a night light utility? It may be set to a cold, i.e., blue-ish color temperature.

Ever tried or perhaps unwittingly set a color filter (in Start menu > Settings app > Ease of Access > Color Filters?)

Does your laptop's monitor have separate settings from the manufacturer for adjusting the color of the image?

Does your graphics chip come with an advanced utility for manipulating colors? It may be set incorrectly. On the other hand, if you didn't install your graphics chip's advanced utility, perhaps you should, to correct an overly blue-ish factory setting.

Have you (or someone else or some software) ever worked with Windows Color Management utility in Control Panel?

Have you ever tried to color calibrate your monitor (using the tool in Control Panel > Color Management?)

It's not totally impossible that your monitor is going bad, although not terribly likely. When monitors start to go bad, it's immediately evident. Nevertheless, you might want to show your laptop to a technician.

The most likely source for your monitor's color is a mistake made along the way in a setting. There's nothing wrong with Windows that needs fixing and updates don't do what you are seeing.

    Hi Greg,

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately none of that worked.

It is very strange this, because as far as I can tell whenever Windows is supposed to display white (0xFFFFFF) it is instead displaying the blue/green colour instead. As far as I can tell every other colour displays correctly!

For example, right now the "Type here to search" box to the right of to the Start button currently looks white, although it is in fact 0xFDFDFD). However as soon as I hover the cursor/mouse over it, it changes to blue/green because it is then displayed as 0xFFFFFF.

Hi WCTGIR. I'm Greg, awarded MVP for eleven years, Volunteer Moderator, and Independent Advisor here to help you until this is resolved.

First I've heard of this one.

    1. Did you know about when it changed? See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem began following this guide: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...

System Restore is your first line of defense and can take you back to a point before a problem began. If it doesn't help then you can undo it. Read about it first in the tutorial above and then try restoring to just before this started.

If the problem repeats or System Restore doesn't work then check which Windows Updates were installed at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Update History, uninstall them there or System Restore again, then immediately check for and block the Updates with the Hide Updates tool explained here: https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninsta...

    1. The Display driver is so important here that merely updating it is sometimes not enough. So let's try everything possible to get it working correctly:

First make sure you have updated the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

If necessary first remove the old driver using DDU (not necessary with Microsoft Basic driver which is a placeholder if nothing else is available) and/or installing in Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet), or Safe Mode, accessed by one of these methods: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/...

or the Nvidia Update utility here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e...

or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

    1. Reset the theme by setting a new Theme from Settings > Personalization > Themes or from the many spectacular free Themes you can download from the Store to that Themes panel to choose from: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/collectio...

To get color back on the task bar, start menu and window frames after Version 1903 turned the Light theme dull grey follow this guide:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

To get the spectacular scenic backgrounds back on the Lock screen when the PC first starts up, go into Settings > Personalization > Lock Screen and set the drop down menu to Windows Spotlight.

More about personalizing by customizing appearance here:

    https://www.windowscentral.com/how-customize-lo...

To save a Windows 10 custom Theme so you can reapply it when Updates or Version mess it up, see here:

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to choose if I solved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
