Windows 10: Power button doesn't turn the computer on anymore, but will turn it off

Since Friday, after having some problems with a USB hub that was damaged, it seems I'm now able to shut down my PC with my power button as is usual, but it only turns on after I disable the PSU for a second or two and then enable it again.

How do I fix this?

Even after my PC went into sleep mode this afternoon I still had to use the PSU method to get it back online again.

Is it possible that a driver problem could have caused this?

Thanks for your time.

Additional note: this happened after my most recent Windows Update, which was installed this Friday.

This doesn't address that my computer won't simply turn on when I press the power button.

Hi and thanks for reaching out. My name is Bernard an Independent Advisor and a Windows fan like you. I'll be happy to help you out today.

This problem actually occurs when there is a problem on your power options, kindly follow the steps below and I hope this helps.

Before doing any method below, try to check this first:

Open control panel, Click Hardware and Sound then click Power Options

Click Choose what power buttons do and make sure that the option "When I press power button" on battery and plugged in is on Shutdown.

If none will work follow the steps below:

Method 1. Restore default power options

-Press Windows key + R then type:

    powercfg -restoredefaultschemes

    -Restart PC and check.

    Method 2. Run power Troubleshooter

    • Press Windows key + R then type:

    msdt.exe /id PowerDiagnostic

    • Click OK then follow the prompt to run the power troubleshooter

    -Restart the device after

    Method 3.

Open Control Panel> Click Hardware and Sound > Click Power Options> then click Choose what the power buttons do > Click Change settings that are currently unavailable> Check Sleep (or uncheck then check it again)

    Click Save Changes then restart.

    Method 4. Do clean boot:

A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

    • In the search box on the taskbar, type msconfig and select System Configuration from the results.
    • On the Services tab of System Configuration, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then select Disable all.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select Open Task Manager.
    • Under Startup in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then select Disable.
    • Close Task Manager.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select OK. When you restart the computer, it's in a clean boot environment.
