what tools(flash drives, etc.) needed for Clean Install tool

What do I need to have ready to use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool to perform a Clean Install of Windows.  Since my files are corrupted it probably should be a complete wipe to achieve a truly Clean Windows 10, I'm guessing.  It seems though that at least a Flash Drive, stick, or thumb drive(whatever its called) will be needed.  What size GB and how many will be necessary?  I'm hoping to get step by step instructions from Microsoft support because I'm not well versed in PCs (a Dummie, actually).  Any advice...Please?

    Hi klaro,

I'm Rodrigo, Independent Advisor and I will help you.

You just need only 1 flash drive with a minimum size of 8 GB.

Follow this well-done step-by-step guide and you will make it with no problems.

Thank you, BulldogXX,  Might it be wiser for me to just purchase a new PC with Windows 10 already installed?  If so will Windows copy my current data onto the new PC unless I enter all new data during set up: IE: MSN account name and all other info.

It seems that to do that would merely transfer corrupted data from one PC to the other.

Or, could I install a new hard drive?  As all this shows you, I know very little of the basics of how Windows/MSN works.

I'm looking for the best and easiest solution to once again have a clean PC.

I have several 'how to use Windows 10'  but can't find one that explains how to set it up.  All those little boxes of options which I don't understand the exact meaning of!!!!

At any rate, I sincerely thank you for your help.  klaro

By way of hardware, all you'll need is one 8 GB USB flash drive. USB 3 or USB 2, doesn't matter. Be aware that the Media Creation Tool (which creates the Windows installer on the USB flash drive) is going to erase the USB flash drive.

The Windows installer is designed to be straightforward and easy to use. It's designed for an average user (age immaterial). Microsoft's detailed instructions are here:

Start fresh with a clean installation of Windows 10

There are several ways to approach a clean install. There is no 'one right way' that works best. There are just too many variables.  In addition, different people have different philosophies for using a computer. For example, computers are my hobby, so I approach a clean install with military precision. You don't need to be that way - I do that because I enjoy it.

You really shouldn't do a clean install unless your computer's hardware is supported on Windows 10. Otherwise, it's an invitation to frustration. I'll offer you two more suggestions, then send you on your way:

1- A clean install starts by effectively erasing your hard drive, so anything you don't backup is going to be lost.

2- Microsoft definitely has its preferences about how you should setup your computer, and you will notice that in the prompts you see. I suggest to just do it Microsoft's way. There's nothing about a Windows install that you can't change later if you want to.

Have some champagne ready to celebrate your victory!

    Hey Klaro -

Follow the gold standard Clean Install Windows 10 in this link which compiles the best possible Install of Windows which will stay that way as long as you stick with the tools and methods given, has zero reported problems, and is better than any amount of money could buy.

To create bootable Windows 10 Installation Media (on another PC if necessary) install Media Creation tool and follow the steps toward the bottom of the download page here in the section "Using the tool to create installation media:"
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/software-download/windows10?d2784474-fdb0-4e9d-9e47-5e88c0e053ec=True

Insert media, boot it by powering up PC while pressing the BIOS Boot Menu Key for your PC maker given in this chart: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/23010-bios-boot-menu-f-keys-hotkeys-system-manufacturer-oem.html

If the media won't boot you may need to enter BIOS/UEFI Setup (pressing key given in chart in link above) to turn off Fast Boot or Fast Startup first.

Choose the boot device as a UEFI device if offered, then on second screen choose Install Now, then Custom Install, then at the drive selection screen delete all partitions down to Unallocated Space to get it cleanest, select the Unallocated Space, click Next to let it create and format the needed partitions and start install - this makes it foolproof.

There is a step to rescue your files first using the booted media if you don't have them backed up:  http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows\_10-update/rescue-files-when-windows-wont-start/862c143f-9239-4e63-8968-635e8ba9efd6

You will get and keep the best possible install to the exact extent you stick with the steps, tools and methods in the linked tutorial.  It's a great learning experience that will make you the master of your PC because you will learn everything that works best and how to apply it with your own hands.

I hope this helps.  Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes.  I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
