BSOD Loop - PNP DETECTED FATAL ERROR (Can't enter windows or safe mode)

I set my computer to sleep one night, forgetting that there was a Windows Update I could install. I hadn't scheduled the update so windows would update when I restart or shut down my laptop.

The next morning, I opened my laptop and I was met with the BSOD with an error message of PNP DETECTED FATAL ERROR. My laptop then went to the System Recovery screen with all the options. I'll list what I've tried and the results.

DISCLAIMERS:

  1. I'm sure a factory reset would fix my problems, but I want to avoid doing a factory reset if at all possible.
  2. I don't have any USB/Flash Drives at the moment, but if a method using one would fix my problems, I'll try as soon as I have access to one.

1. Continue to Windows 10 - My laptop goes to the BSOD and then goes back to recovery mode

2. Start-up Repair - My laptop goes to the SRT screen where it diagnoses and attempts to repair errors. After around 1 hour, it goes to a blue screen with text saying that it failed and I should check the log files. I checked the log files, and there are two repair actions that failed. Image of failed section: https://pasteboard.co/JOOGfvq.jpg

3. Startup Settings - I tried all 3 Safe Mode boots as well as the Low-Resolution boot (just as a random attempt) and each time it brings me back to the BSOD then Recovery Mode screen.

4. Command Prompt - I've tried a few things, but I'm open to try more stuff. One of the things I tried is in this post: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/690502/bsod-cannot-boot-safemode-or-system-restore/?p=4986285. I removed all my Corsair drivers because I have a Corsair mouse and that seemed to be the issue in the post, but the author didn't have the same error code as me, so I'm not too surprised it didn't work. If it would solve my problems but I just need to find a faulty driver (I'm not sure if there are any, I just tried this because the author of the post was having the same symptoms as me, he didn't have the same error code as me. I have no idea if my problems have anything to do with faulty drivers.)

5. Uninstall Updates - I've tried uninstalling both the latest Feature Update and the Quality Update, but they both fail. The error message I get it: "We ran into a problem and won't be able to uninstall the latest [Quality/Feature] update of Windows.

6. System Image Recovery- I have no system images that I can use to recover. "Windows cannot find a system image on this computer."

7. System Restore - I have two restoration points, one for the 12/2/21 and the 15/2/21, but they both fail an have the same result. Here is an image of the pop up I get once it fails: https://pasteboard.co/JOOD2bu.jpg.

Please, if you have any solution to this please tell me.

Disclaimers again:

  1. I don't want to factory reset.
  2. I have no USB or Flash Drives but I will access to some soon so if you have a solution that requires a USB, please tell me.

Thank you,

Tino J

EDIT: (My solution)

Finally, I fixed it!

If anybody is wondering how I fixed this, here is what I did:

DISCLAIMER: If you have this problem, a factory reset will most likely fix it, however I wanted to keep ALL my files, not just my personal files which is why I did this. The steps below tell you how to fix this problem/reinstall Windows 10 while keeping ALL of your files, not just your personal files.

(You need access to a working laptop/desktop for this, I used my brother's laptop for this)

  1. I went to this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install and downloaded the software.
  2. I plugged in my USB drive and selected it through the software. The I let the program install the latest Windows 10 update onto my USB. This took a while so I left it running overnight.
  3. The next morning I removed the USB from my brother's laptop and plugged it in to mine(the one that wasn't working).
  4. I then turned on my laptop, and it automatically went to the installation screen for Windows 10.
  5. I selected the 2nd option, the 1st option doesn't work when your PC is in this state, (I don't remember the exact names of the options) and then selected the type of Windows I wanted, in this case Windows 10 Pro.
  6. I chose the drive I wanted Windows to install on, for me my C: drive.
  7. I let Windows install, it didn't take too long. However, when the installation finished, my laptop automatically restarted and went back to the installation screen. I didn't know what to do so I installed it again (thankfully it didn't ruin anything) but if you are to do this, just remove your usb once the installation process finishes the 1st time and let Windows restart.
  8. Windows restarted properly this time and brought me to the Windows Setup screen. I followed all the steps and then I was on my desktop with everything working properly.
  9. To recover my files, I went to the Windows.old folder and moved all the files I wanted into my main Windows and program files folder.
  10. Even though all my programs and their data were saved, I still had to re-install all my applications. Thankfully, it was easy enough to do. I went through my program files folder (the one I copied from Windows.old) and searched up every application I wanted on the internet. I then ran the installlers for each app and deleted the installers once they were done. To make sure everything was properly installed, I went to Control Panel and to Uninstall a Program. If the program is there, it means it is well installed and you can use it.

That's how I fixed my laptop! If anyone has this same issue, hopefully this helps you!

Thanks,

Tino J

    Hello, Tino

    Thank you for contacting the Microsoft Community.

    My name is Juliana I am an independent advisor and I will do my best to help.

    1.Press Windows Key + I to open the Settings application.

    2.When the Settings application opens, navigate to the Update and security section.

    3.Now click the Check for updates button

    Windows will look for available updates and download them automatically in the background. After the updates are downloaded, they will be installed as soon as you restart your PC. Once your system is up to date, check to see if the error message still appears.

    STEP 2

    Update your drivers

    Windows 10 requires drivers to recognize and use your hardware, and if a specific driver is out of date, you will not be able to use that hardware component and will receive a BSOD error like PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR. To correct these errors, it is recommended to update all drivers on your Windows 10 PCS. Updating drivers is quite simple, and you can do this simply by visiting the hardware manufacturer's website and downloading the latest drivers for your device.

    I'm not sure if I'm missing something but pressing windows+i doesn't do anything. Just to clarify, I am stuck on the recovery mode screen after BSOD and can't boot into safe mode or windows. Is pressing windows+i meant to do something on the recover settings screen?

    1 ° Turn off the computer;

    2 ° Remove all peripherals from your device (including power supply and battery (in case of notebook) if possible);

    3 ° Then keep the Power button pressed for 15 seconds;

    4 ° Reconnect the removed peripherals (if you have one) and turn on the equipment and check the behavior of the system.

    If it is not possible to access the system, perform the Windows startup repair processes, following the steps below:

    1 ° When the computer is being turned on, constantly press the F10 or Shift + F10 key;

    2 ° In the options that appear, click on Troubleshooting;

    3 ° Now click on Advanced Options;

    4 ° In Advanced Options click on Startup Repair and proceed with the screen directions. This procedure will take a few minutes.

    WARNING: This process must be performed before and while displaying the Windows logo and if you do not have Windows boot options, restart your computer and try again, but if it does not show after a few attempts, or if a problem persists after the processes let us know, so that we can resolve it as soon as possible.

    I tried doing that, but it doesn't work. It restarts my laptop and shows the BSOD (PNP detected fatal error) and then brings me back to the automatic repair and recovery screen.
