Drag and Drop partially stops working

This has been going on for a little while now and I can't seem to figure it out, but my drag and drop appears to stop working, but only in certain ways, and requires reboot to fix.

  1. The computer works normally when freshly started
  2. At some point with no noticeable trigger, this behavior starts
  3. I am unable to drag files in the Explorer (was trying too drag and drop into After Effects)
  4. I am unable to drag files on the desktop
  5. I am unable to drag tabs in Firefox
  6. I am unable to drag elements in After Effects
  7. I am ABLE to drag whole windows around to reposition

The only thing that temporarily fixes it is a restart. I have tried crashing and restarting Explorer to no effect, and looked at the registry for any errors but found none. Multiple mice have been tried with the same behavior across the board, wired or wireless.

Please help.

New information: I went to restart, but realized I needed to save a file and cancelled it, and the functionality came back.

Is this the first time the issue occurs? Prior to the issue, have you made any recent changes on your computer? I can see that you've updated your post, does the issue still persist? If so, try the methods below and check if any of the resolves fixes the issue.

    Method 1: Update Driver

    1. Open run box by pressing Windows Key + R and type devmgmt.msc then hit enter
    2. Locate and expand Mice and other pointing devices
    3. Right-click HID-compliant mouse and select Update driver
    4. Select Search automatically for drivers
    5. Wait for the process to complete, once completed, restart your computer and check if it resolves your issue.

    Method 2: Roll-back driver

    1. Open run box by pressing Windows Key + R and type devmgmt.msc then hit enter
    2. Locate and expand Mice and other pointing devices
    3. Right-click HID-compliant mouse and select Update driver
    4. Select Browse my computer for drivers
    5. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer
    6. Select any older driver from the list and click next
    7. Wait for the process to complete, once completed, restart your computer and check if it resolves your issue.

If the methods above did not work, please don't hesitate to reach back.

Hope this help. Have a good day.

    Thank you.
