AKG Y500 Bluetooth headset works as headphones over the Bluetooth link, but the PC cannot detect the microphone

I recently purchased a AKG Y500 Bluetooth Headset. It works perfectly on my iPhone and iPad. On my Dell XPS 8900 they only function as headphones: I can hear audio using the BlueTooth connection, but the PC is not finding the microphone.

I have other microphones (all USB) that function as expected.

I contacted AKG tech support and they concluded that the headset is functioning as designed. The fact that the microphone works on the iDevices seems to support this conclusion.

I have researched this as thoroughly as I can and tried all of the recommendations I have found online but nothing has worked.

I normally don't like to go negative but Microsoft has been useless in resolving this problem. This is the second thread I have created on this problem. Like this one, I got one person to respond, but he ran out of ideas and gave up and nobody picked it up to continue working with me.

Microsoft: if you are listening, the support provided here sucks.

    Hi all (especially Carlo),

Thank you for this thorough information, but unfortunately the Hands-Free device still inactive. In my case, I could "DISABLED/ENABLED" the device, but the 'connect' button is greyed out. I've already tried multiple ways to get this to work but still no luck. I think the only solution should be the AKGY 500 HF driver as listed here [ https://www.runonpc.com/akg-y500-wireless-hands-free-ag-driver-downloads-update/ ]. This link is blocked due to insecure file content.

Just wondering if you could advise the best solution for this? FYI, AKG and my laptop manufacturer have been contacted but there seemed no 'pretty' solution except "I am sorry to hear this".

Thanks to all who might clarify this.

Carlo: Thanks for the response! I went through your instructions... my results/comments are inserted in blue font below.

    I turned my headset on.

Went to Settings -> Bluetooth or other device and connected the headset: it says “Connected Music” [which I think is the basic problem: Windows is treating this device as headphones: It does seem to be aware that it has a microphone too]

Here are the steps you can try.
    Run the Microphone troubleshooter

    -Press Windows key + X
    -Go to Settings
    -Click Update and Security
    -Click Troubleshoot then “additional troubleshooter
-Look for Speech , click it and run the troubleshooter.

Had two choices: Selected “Cortana can’t hear me”

Selected my device: Headset – AKG Y500 WIRELESS Hands-Free AG Audio No jack information available.”

Response: “Plug in the microphone or headset. The device does not appear to be plugged in. Check the connection, plug in the device, then click next.

Resolution: The microphone or headset us unplugged [not entirely shocking since it is a Bluetooth Wireless device....]

Once done proceed with these steps.
    -Press Windows key + X
    -Go to Device Manager
-Expand the Audio Input and Output
-Look for Microphone driver that was installed

My headset is not listed under “Audio Inputs and Outputs.”

It *is* listed under the Bluetooth tab.

    AKG Y500 WIRELESS

    AKG Y500 WIRELESS Avrcp Transport

    -Right click and Update
-Look for "Browse my computer for driver
-Let me pick drivers available drivers
-Choose an old driver and use it.

I did this for both the AKG drivers… in both cases it did not find an old driver.

It said “Windows has determined that the best driver for this device is already installed. There may be better drivers on Windows Update or the device manufacturer’s website”

    -Go to Control Panel
-In Control Panel, select Large icons from the View by drop down menu.
    -Select Sound.
-Select the Recording tab, then right-click on any empty place inside the device list and tick Show Disabled Devices.
-Right click the Headset Microphone and click Enable.

My device (Headset – AKG Y500 WIRELESS Hands-Free AG Audio) is Disconnected

-Right-click it again and select Set as Default Device.

“Set as Default Device” is shown but not enabled.

-Right click Headset Microphone and click Properties.
-Click the Levels tab, then drag the volume slider towards the largest value.

No Levels tab appears… all I have is a General tab.

    -Click OK, then click OK.

Turn on Microphone Privacy in each app.

You lost me on this one… I have no idea where to go to do this….

Select Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone . In Allow access to the microphone on this device, select Change and make sure Microphone access for this device is turned on.
Then, allow apps access to your microphone.
Once you've allowed microphone access to your apps, you can change the settings for each app.
