Internet doesn't connect on startup

This has been happening to me recently and I don't know why. It's not a huge inconvenience, but it is annoying and I want to figure out how to fix it.

When I boot my pc and log in to the desktop screen, my internet will not connect for about 30 seconds. This makes it so all the apps that I have that open on startup do not work properly and tabs that I have pinned on my browser are not connected to the internet. Only after waiting a short moment will I connect to the internet and everything will work normally. This just suddenly started happening and it has never happened before. I'm not sure what changed to cause this. I am also on a pc and connected to the internet through an ethernet cable.

Please help me figure this out.

    Hi Helloweenman,

Thanks for the additional info. Internet Service Provider routers usually has a reset button at the back. If you are comfortable re configuring your WIFI settings in the router page later. You can try to reset the router by pressing the reset button. Just holding that down for 15 secs resets the router settings. See if the issue still persists after reset. If it does, it's possibly a router (hardware) issue.

Hi, thank you for your prompt reply.

After reinstalling the ethernet adapter driver and trying a clean boot, the problem still persists. I also tried disabling all my antivirus software and windows defender and then restarting, but that didn't help either. Some new information I've found is that when I unplug and replug my ethernet cable, it will also take up to a minute to actually connect to the internet, similar to when I boot my pc. It wasn't like this before. Do you have any ideas how to fix this?

I tried starting my pc in safe mode with networking and changing ethernet cables, but the problem is still here after doing both. I ended up trying to test if another pc would have the same problem, so I connected an ethernet cable to my other pc and the problem happened there too. I suspect that the problem has to do with my router instead of my pc or windows. I might have to bring this problem up with the Rogers community instead. If you have anymore tips I'd appreciate it, but I am very thankful for the all help you have already given me.

    Hi Helloweenman,

Would you have another working ethernet cable to try? Could be an issue with the ethernet cable. I also suggest trying it under safemode with networking. See if the connection still behaves the same way.

To start your computer to safemode with Networking:

    1. Once you are at the Windows 10 sign-in screen, hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and not let it go. While holding down the Shift key, click on the Power button (Windows 10 Power Button) and then click on Restart.
    2. When Windows 10 restarts, you will be at the Choose an Option screen. Click Troubleshoot
    3. From Troubleshoot screen, click Advanced Options, then click Startup Settings
    4. On the Startup Settings option and you will now be presented with the Startup Settings screen. Click the Restart button
    5. Windows will now begin to start, but you will be presented with a screen that provides various options you can select to specify how Windows should be started.
    6. Press F5 to start Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

    Let me know what happens.

    Hi Helloweenman,

Good day! This is Jhakesong an Independent Advisor and I will be happy to assist you with this.

I am sorry to hear about the inconvenience. Do you have a third party antivirus installed? This can cause the behavior as some antivirus software has network monitor capability.

To troubleshoot the issue, let's try to reinstall the ethernet driver.

    Here's how:

    1. Press Windows key + X
    2. Open Device Manager
    3. Expand Network Adapters
    4. Look for your ethernet adapter driver, right click and uninstall
    5. Restart your computer, to allow windows to reinstall the driver.

It could also be caused by any startup programs installed on your computer. If after uninstalling the network driver the issue still persists, I suggest running your computer in clean boot. Here's how:

Let me know how it goes. Have a great day!
