Took ownership but cannot make changes to WindowsApp folder

Hi Guys,

I'm hoping someone can give me a hand getting this to work, I really don't like how MS handles this. I'm using the Xbox Game Pass on Windows which, unfortunately, locks your games away in the dreadful WindowsApps folder. I would like to install some mods in some of my games but I can't do this without access to their directories.

I have tried doing the Take Ownership registry hack and used it to take ownership of the folder. This lets me browse the folder but I can't actually add or remove files to them. When I try to add files it says the disk is full, all the folders are set as read-only but when I try to change this it says I do not have permission.

Is there a solution for this?

Thank you kindly in advance.

    ok, let's try to change the user's permissions.

    If you haven't tried, but now directly in the folder where you want to change the files.

    Tick the file or folder with the right mouse button and access the "Properties" option;

    In the "Security" tab, select the "Advanced" option;

    In "Owner", press the "Change" button;

    You will need to provide the computer administrator's password to proceed;

    Enter your username on the computer and press the "Check names" button, as in the image below;

    If you entered the correct name, the system will find your data and fill in the field with the account description. To confirm the change, check the "Ok" button;

    If you want to apply the change to other folders or files within the folder you are editing, access the "Disable inheritance" option. Finally, confirm with "Ok".

    Review folder permissions

    The system provides a feature that allows you to review the permissions of a folder. If the problem is not resolved using the ownership change, this action may work.

    Step 1. In the folder properties, access the "Security" option again. At that moment, press the "Edit" button;

    Enter the administrator password for the computer to continue the procedure;

    Select "Account or group name" for your account. Then, check the option "Full control" and press "Apply".

    Check your Antivirus settings

    Your computer's antivirus may be making it difficult to access folders and files in your account. Check the software settings to see if there is any protection for files or similar settings. If so, disable this feature and try to make changes to the folder.

    If it doesn't work, try temporarily disabling the antivirus and try to access or modify the folder or files again. Remember to activate the antivirus at the end of the procedure to not leave your PC vulnerable.

    Check file encryption

    Access to a folder can be denied because its contents are encrypted. That is, only the user who performed the encryption and has a password will be able to access this folder. This feature is offered in professional versions of Windows. If you have this version of the system, access the file properties and, in the "General" tab, choose the option "Encrypt the content to protect the data". Action will block everything inside the folder for other system users.

    This type of security measure is transparent and the owner will never realize that encryption is active on a folder. However, if the account does not have the certificate used in the procedure, Windows will deny access. Only those who have added the security element can remove it.

    Other alternatives to resolve denied access

    Disabling User Account Control is an unusual solution but, in some cases, can reverse the problem. To perform the procedure, enter the term UAC in Windows search and select the option "Change Account and User Control Settings". Then, drag the slider all the way and confirm "OK".

    Once this is done, try the steps above again to take ownership of the folder.

    Fix Denied Destination Folder Access

    The message "Destination Folder Access Denied" is a more specific problem, but it can happen. Most of the time, the fix is to use the same methods listed above. In addition, also try to check permissions on the source folder.

    The above procedures can ensure that the problem of access denied to folders and files on your computer is resolved. To avoid this problem, try to be the administrator of the computer or have the same permissions as those users on folders and files that are of shared use. Remember to never change permissions on folders that are managed by Windows to avoid problems with the system's operation.

    Got it, let's do our best to solve your problem, try the following:

    If the above option fails, create a new user.

    Step - 2

    1. Press the Windows + R key combinations and type: Control userpasswords2 and click OK.
    2. Select your User and make 02 clicks with the left mouse button.

    If the "Administrator" option is already enabled, your User is an Administrator. If not, just log off your User Profile and log in again, so that your User will already have Administrative Privileges.

    To log off, press the Windows + R key combinations and at Run type: Shutdown -L

    Step - 3

    Hi Caludeera,

    Thank you for the quick response.

    I have followed your steps but, unfortunately, there is a problem.

    I was able to change all the permissions except when I tried current_config I received this message:

    HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG cannot be opened.

    An error is preventing this key from being opened.

    Details: Access is denied.

    It would not allow me to change the permission and now when I open regedit or try to click on the current_config folder I get that message every time.

    Now when I try to access the permissions for current_config I get this error:

    You do not have permission to view the current permission settings for HKEY_CURRENT_CONFG, but you can make permission changes.

    Which I cant, opening the permissions window now gives you no information and the permission check boxes are greyed out.

    In addition, the permissions on local_machine and users have reverted back.

    I am still unable to modify anything in the windowsapps folder. I am able to remove read-only on the main windowsapp folder, it goes through all the motions but then when I check again the read-only is back on.
