I can select some custom colours but i can only see an option to have either a black background, this looks odd, or white this is too bright.

I normally like a dark theme but not black, i need grey. How is it done?

"especially as newer monitors can be very bright. "

There should be options in your monitors OSD to reduce brightness and contrast, or to use another colour profile such as sRGB.

Some monitors also have a blue light filter that works similarly to Windows Night Light.

But yeah! Many of us have wondered why MS has significantly reduced the user configuration\personalisation options with Win10.

I used to use a light blue\grey on XP and Win7. There is a lot about the Win10 UI not to like.

Win10 has ushered in a new level of MS playing at Big Brother knows best.

    OK thank you both.

I will give night lighting a go.

Seems like an odd choice that Microsoft wouldn't allow some degree of change rather than 2 very contrasting options, especially as newer monitors can be very bright.

    Regards.

    Hi nrosko

How are you? I hope you are doing good.

In any Explorer window, right-click a folder to open the context menu.

Under the "Change Icon" submenu you can find pre-defined colors to apply to the folder.

Click the color you like and the folder instantly becomes of that color.

You could check on this link for more information.

I hope it helps! Let us know the result,

    We'll wait for your update.

Sorry that is for the icon itself. I want to change the the black or white background when the folder is open to a softer colour like grey.
