Reset This PC -- "Keep my files" option

I was wondering, if you select the "Keep my files" option while resetting the PC, what folders does Windows keep on the laptop? And besides that, does Windows wipe everything else other than those folders?

Any help is appreciated! :)

    Dear Land Kruzer,

Resetting your Windows 10 PC means that all the system files are deleted and then restored to their originals. All your desktop applications are removed from your PC, so you have to reinstall and reconfigure each of them after the reset process is done. Files that are not saved are moved to the C:\Windows.old directory. You can recover files from this directory after the reset.

And the answer of your question is: Files in your user profile folder (C:\Users\YourName) are saved as expected but files stored directly in the users folder (C:\Users) and not in a specific user profile are NOT saved. The Public user profile (C:\Users\Public) is NOT saved as well.

PS 1: If you haven't installed the Operating System on D drive, then you will not lose any files in Ddrive

PS 2: I recommend you to backup your data by yourself and put them in the External Hard Drive or anywhere you preferer.

    Hi Land

I am Dave, an Independent Advisor, I will help you with this . . .

The 'Keep My Files' option will keep your personal files that are stored in the user library folders inside your user profile folder, like the Documents folder, Pictures folder . . etc.), if you store files in other places on your C dive, there is no guarantee those files would be retained during a Reset

Files on other partitions or drives will not be touched by a Windows 10 Reset, provided you do not choose the 'Clean the Drives' option . . .

All your software will need to be re-installed after the reset, usually all files associated with the installed software is removed, though sometimes, some of those files remain, but the software will not work and will need to be re-installed . ..

Hi Land, yes, the registry is reset to a fully clean version, the same as if you clean installed Windows 10 from a bootable USB . . .

Thanks a lot! One more thing, will the Registry be reset, too?
