Explore.exe Error Isn’t Going Away. Start and Settings Don’t Work Either!

Hi guys :(

I’m so frustrated! I got a random Windows 10 Security update (KB4601319) about 2 days back, and upon my laptop restarting automatically, I keep seeing an “Explorer.exe” error when I try to access my “Start” menu (which doesn’t work anymore), neither do any of the other icons on the taskbar (except for Firefox). And the worst issue is I am unable to access my Settings due to these issues...

I have tried NUMEROUS things ranging from using the “Run” software for msconfig, WSReset.exe, regedit, powershell, rstrui, winver, regedt32, etc..

I have also tried using “Command Prompt” for Scannow, DSIM, and a few more things but I keep failing to find a solution.

I’ve tried rebooting, going into Safe Mode and trying to access my settings at least via Run, but NOTHING.

I have an Acer Aspire E5-574G laptop and these issues along with the “Explorer.exe” error are ruining my life! I’m going crazy spending hours trying to find solutions, and everything I found online leads to errors and no resolutions :’(

The error is numbered as “File System Error (-2144927436)” btw. And if it’s not this, it says “Class not Registered” a lot of the times too.

P.S: I must also mention that, every time I restart my laptop, once desktop interface loads, my entire screen goes black for 5 seconds, and then it goes back to normal. Which is something that’s never happened before..

Thanks a lot in advance!

Please help me!

    Hi Talita,

    Unfortunately, just as I thought, this didn’t work either...

    Also, I don’t know I told you this earlier, but under Task Manager, my Disk usage is 100%, which is SO WEIRD! I’ve never seen this number before..

    Regarding scanning, as mentioned in my first post, I tried scannow via command prompt, but it kept getting errors and wouldn’t finish the task.

    I don’t know what to do anymore.

    Please let me know if there’s anything else I can try.

    Thank you

    I'm sorry to hear that, it looks like we've covered everything. Have you tried a clean boot?

    Initialization is to find out if there is a problem with any software.

    I also suggest that you scan to see if there is any malware on your computer.

    The cracking problem can be related to hardware problems.

    That way, I'll give you a clean boot. If still nothing resolves, please let me know that I will continue with your question

    Clean boot

    Go to Windows + R, type MSconfig and click OK;

    In the System Configuration window click on the services tab;

    At the bottom of the screen, check the Hide all Microsoft services box and click Disable all; (you will be disabling third party services)

    Now click on the Programs Startup tab and click on Open Task Manager;

    In the task manager window on the startup tab, disable all non-Microsoft programs, close the task manager and confirm ok in system configuration and restart the computer.

    All third-party programs are disabled. Then you can enable it again (I suggest you write down which ones you have disabled). If the problem is resolved, some software was causing a conflict and must be removed.

    Sincerely

    Talita C

    Dear Talita,

    Thank you so much for taking out the time to try and help me :)

    I just did the steps you suggested, and it unfortunately did not solve anything :(.

    There were 2 explorer.exe tasks under Details, and I ended both of them, still nothing..

    I also somehow tried to dig into my Local C: hard drive settings, and upon troubleshooting (which took almost an hour), it said under “Problems Found”:

    “Check for Windows Update Issues”..

    And it didn’t do anything to fix it..

    Before you replied, I also tried uninstalling the new Windows 10 Security update, and I managed to do just that, but the system requested me to restart for it to take effect, and once it restarted, it installed the damn update again 😒 Lol..

    Windows is playing with me.

    Kindly suggest what you think I could try next please?

    Thank you so much!

    P.S: Another thing I forgot to mention in my first post was that upon restarting my laptop, I also hear a small pop (which sounds like a pop you may hear from a speaker) for like a millisecond. It’s also strange, as something like that’s never happened before 🤷🏼‍♀️
